INDIAN JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Vol 33

This issue is a continuation of Psoriasis- Titled Psoriasis II. It is a very insightful issue with honest introspection and detailed case taking with senior physicians revealing how tough Psoriasis is to tackle with an in-depth analysis of success and failures---especially failures, so that we can learn from their mistakes. It is appreciable that they have openly stated in great detail the entire experience of case taking and prescribing with its pitfalls. A must read for every homoeopathic physician.

Cases Dr Ganesh Rao: Cases treated with Kali sulph, Lycopodium, Mag-mur etc. given in detail. He finds remedies like Kali-sulph, Ars-alb, Ars-iod, Petroleum very helpful in acute and painful conditions; and that the chronic remedy in 30 potency is most suitable- to start with OD/HS (monitored weekly). Ars-alb (ARs-iod) 200 for acuts restlessness and itching > heat, controls agony initially. Kali-sulph 6X TDS/ODS controls scaling and may be given for 4-6 weeks. Cracks + Haemorrhage, if painful, are > by petroleum 30/200. These guidelines will surely help all H-physicians to treat this most difficult condition with confidence---so I've reproduced it in toto.

Dr Neeraj Goel has given some general outlines and points of interest. Thyrodinum 200 single dose, helped an obese patient with guttate psoriasis. Where constitutional/anti-miasmatic drugs do not help, he advises local medicines like Kali-sulph or Hydrocotyl in low potency repeatedly. He has given a case of a 9-year old child who did very well on Calc-iod. Another case of Lycopodium fro an ambitious lady.

Dr C B Jain has given a case of a single woman aged 42 years who he has been treating for the 18 years. She is much ameliorated and he has been able to manage her case well, in-spite of occasionally pitfalls. Basically treated with Nat-mur with occasional doses of Sulphur. Another case, of a 45 year old male, responded initially to Lycopodium and later needed Ars-iod. This is a very brave article and I request every homoeopath to read it in detail as any synopsis will not give the impact.

Dr Praful Barvalia : A 4 ½ year old girl who had fear of dark and was very clingy was prescribed Stramonium to great effect. Another case of a 21 year old obese, dependent, lazy but with lots of aspirations and fancies, did very well on Calc-silicata. A case of Mag-Mur on deeper study revealed Lachesis, which brought substantial belief.

Dr Rajesh Bhogale gives an interesting case of Ferr-met. An article by ELLISE BAKER has been reproduced from a 1935 journal of 2 interesting cases where Sulphur 3XBD and Psorimum 30 every Sunday. Thyroid 3x to assist Sulphur 3x gave remarkable results. Most importantly she put both her cases on a pure vegetarian diet to 'detox' them.

A Repertory for Psoriasis is given by Dr Neeta Mehta and Dr Jeenal Shah. An article on Indian Systems of Medicines and Homoeopathy in Health care delivery by Dr Gauri Gupta and Dr Eswara Das completes the issue.

Vol 33 No1-July-Sept 00

Kali-iod / Sil / Tub-b / Tub-b / Phos / Calc-fl / Lach / Crot-c / Merc-cor

An issue of IJHM after a long lapse. The Journal has been taken over by the above Foundation. The issue is devoted to gastro-intestinal disorders and contains good case material relating to pancreatitis. Chronic pancreatitis is an irreversible disease for which cure is not available in allopathy. It is an inflammatory disease of the pancreas leading to persistent and progressive morphological and functional alterations of the whole organ.

Case 1 Dr Praful Barvalia discusses with CME data such a case in a 43-year-old male, who complained of recurrent bouts of jaundice accompanied by fever and acute abdominal pain and dyspepsia. After migrating to Mumbai he started a beer bar and later came in contact with a leading don of the underworld and indulged in extortion, robbery, prostitution and gambling. He is extremely cruel and violent; also impulsive in his actions. He was thoroughly contemptuous of his relatives. He has no child because of oligospermia but blamed his wife for it; at the same time he is sensitive and helps the poor.

He is obsessively concerned about his health and consulted many doctors. Kali-iodatum was selected on the rubrics; egoistic, contemptuous, censorious; egocentric-mean and selfish; violent; impulsive; desires company; intense need for relationship; anxiety about health. For acute relief of colic Colocynthis and later Mag-phos were given on 23-3-94 and Kali-iod 200 daily at bed time, later BD and TDS. An inter-current dose of Tub-bov 1M was given because of the inherent tubercular miasm. Subsequently the patient did not have any fresh attack of jaundice or acute exacerbation of pancreatitis.

There were loose motions and eruption of several boils, which were treated with acute remedies. Serum amylase came down to normal by 6-12-94; overall his irritability and mental state improved but he was angry with his wife because she went away to her parents. He was kept on Kali-iod 200 4 hourly and later on 1M every night thereafter till 31-12-95. The investigations carried out thereafter revealed he was normal and hence medications discontinued (This case demonstrated the efficacy of Homoeopathy in reversal of pathology and note the daily repetition of high potency of the constitutional remedy)

Case 2: Dr Pravin M Shah discusses another case of pancreatitis in a bright and intelligent 12-year-old boy, treated with Silicea and Tub-bov both in 1M., alternative weeks for 3 months, which palliated his complaint and relieved the pain in epigastrium.

Case 3. Acute Pancreatitis treated with Kali-bi 200 daily with good rellef on daily dose.

Case 4 Dr Praful Barvalia discusses a complex case of a 22 year old male who became an alcoholic and HIV positive because of sex with prostitutes, consulted the doctor for pain in abdomen, with vomiting, evening rise of temperature and loss of wt.

Diagnoses: pancreatitis with associated pseudocyst and mild splenomegaly. The history revealed intense restlessness and love for travel indicating Tub-bov; the temperament and excessive indulgence in sex showed Flouric- acid and Calcarea- flour. The treatment was commenced with Tub-bov 200 on 8-4-94; and the remedy in the same potency was repeated every fortnight and within 3 months his respiratory complaints came under total control; the fever relapsed after 5 months for which he was given Tub-bov 1M every week for a month.

That remedy improved his susceptibility and presented a picture for acute exacerbation of pancreatitis, which responded well to Phos 30 few doses but the patient went back against medical advice to his native place at Hyderabad and started drinking which precipitated a crisis. On a review of the case he was given Calc-flour 30 BD for 3 months.; his abdominal pain decreased and fresh investigations showed better results and he was given Calc-flour 200 daily at night for some months .By 1-3-96 he was much improved and he was given Tub-bov 1M one dose every month and continued on Calc-flour 200 6-4 hourly and later to 1M. Sonography indicated total regression of pancreatic cyst. He is still HIV positive, but his immune status had substantially improved, as there were no major acute episodes since the last 4years.

Case 5: Dr Rajan Sankaran discusses (this case has also been published in his latest book) a case of a 46-year-old woman who consulted him for her severe joint pains and asthma. History of her case revealed two sides -one, thinking that there is no one like her and the other has the feeling that she is being pursued and troubled. She was loquacious but her talk was wandering; talks as though she is two persons instead of one.

On the one hand she wanted her family to be happy and on the other she did not care; she is pessimistic and negative in her outlook; she feels that nothing will work; her daughter's marriage will not work out and her investments will fail. Her main feeling is that people do only negative or bad things to her and can only see the negative side in things; a feeling of hopelessness. Her constant fear is that being on top, she is surrounded by people to get to her and kill her. She is afraid of dark and has the feeling that there is someone behind her to grab her and kill her.

Initially she was given Lachesis because of her loquacity, wandering speech antagonism with herself; jealousy etc but it did not fully meet the case. Dr Rajan then had a group consciousness session with a few colleagues and based on the dreams experienced by the participants he selected the following rubrics

  1. Delusion, people sees, behind him someone is.
  2. Thoughts of death when alone and
  3. Thoughts of murder. On the basis of these she was given Crotalus-cascavella, a snake remedy, which given in infrequent intervals, cured her.
Case 6: Dr Navin Pawaskar and Bipin Jain discuss in detail a case of colitis in a 33 year old male; he hailed from a poor fisherman's family; though he wanted to join military services he was obliged to join engineering college because of family circumstances and compulsions. As a result he developed strong resentment and bitterness against his kith and kin and gave vent to his anger on them. He was highly critical of his family religious practices and even went to the extent of tearing down God's photos and destroying idols and attacking adjoining religious places. Thus a revolutionary was born. His dreams were: falling from height, death of relatives, pursued, chased, exhausted and falls down unconscious.

The Rubrics Selected Were:

  1. Anger, irascibility: tendency
  2. Anger; tendency easily contradiction from;
  3. Anger; violent;
  4. Rage, fury;
  5. Hatred;
  6. Contradiction, intolerant;
  7. Fear, night;
  8. Egotism;
  9. Censorious, critical;
  10. Dictatorial, domineering, dogmatic, despotic;
  11. Revolutionary;
  12. Dreams, frightful;
  13. Dreams: falling high places from;
  14. Dreams: pursued of being
  15. Dreams: death of
Lachesis, Lyco, Nux-vom, Nat-mur, Merc, Calc and Nit-acid came up and from this Mercury was selected.
He was given Merc-cor 200 initially and then Merc-sol later in ascending potencies over one year period which resulted in overall improvement.
