INDIAN JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Vol 31 No 3.

Quarterly Homoeopathic Digest is compiled, translated and published by Dr K S Srinivasan. The part 1 of the journal lists the current literature in Homoeopathy drawn from well-known Homoeopathic journals published world-over. This section is further classified as; philosophy, materia medica, therapeutics, repertory, veterinary, research, history, education, biography, books, and news.

Part 2 gives extracts of selected important articles. The Kiev school of Homoeopathy has developed 'somatic essences' by examining every patient naked and making observations and eliciting information from body looks. The Thuja personality is known to be big, has rounded hips, lemon rind texture of skin greasy hair, warts and visible veins of the nostrils. This aspect of remedy study helps one to prescribe faster and accurately too.

Part 3 features the editors own contribution wherein he points out the mistakes in synthesis repertory [SYN] published by Frederick Schroyens. A few mistakes are as follows: (1) Delusion, Crime, commit, about to: Kali-bich [SYN 51, CR 96] Delusion, Dead, child is, her: Kali-bich [SYN 51, CR97] Kali-bich should be changed to Kali-brom as these symptoms are listed under Kali-brom in Hering's Guiding Symptoms (2) Fear, Poisoned, of being: Kali-bi [SYN 182] This is an addition from Knerr's repertory and Kenrr's abbreviation for Crotalus borridus is Crotal: also Hering's Guiding Symptoms does not include Crotalus cascavella. Hence it should be corrected as Crotalus-horriduls.

INDIAN JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Vol 32 No 1&2.

This is a combined issue of 1& 2 of 1997 and is devoted to endocrinology.
In his editorial Dr Barvalia points out that stress localizes in endocrine gland and the impact is not local but all pervasive. Suppressions of auto-immune endocrinological disorders either by medications or surgery has led to deleterious consequences such as Obsessive compulsive neurosis, endogenous depression and paranoid schizophrenia as is borne out by the cases treated in the Thyroid clinic of the CMP Homeopathic College.

Indiscriminate use of hormone therapy has also led to drug dyscrasia. Potentised hormones and gland secretions such as Folliculinum and Thyroidinum are powerful remedies in treating such drug dyscrasia. This issue analyses a few cases of thyroid dysfunctions.
A female aged 39 came for the treatment of hypothyroidism with facial puffiness weight gain and severe pain in legs. Was an epileptic for over 20 yrs. Her constitutional remedy turned out to be Puls which was given in 1M two doses initially followed by 10M in infrequent doses based on follow-up of the case. Marked relief was noticed in her symptoms. She became more self-confident.

In an analytical study of thyroid dysfunctions (Part I) Dr Barvalia states that there may be two types of hyperthyroidism from miasmatic angle. One is where investigations indicate increased T3 and T4 levels but the thyroid scan shows a normal sized gland, which is hyperactive without goitre or any hyperplasia's; this Psoric and cases of this type can be expected to be cured within 5-6 months.

The second type is hyper plastic gland leading to thyroid growth and increased vascularity and hypersecretion of hormones. Hypothyroid state as a result of auto-immune thyroid dysfunction which comes up rapidly indicates tubercular miasm which will take longer to cure. For accurate diagnosis correlation of clinical picture with investigations are imperative.

He has illustrated his points by an exhaustive case study of a female patient with thyrotoxicosis whose constitutional remedy based on a full history was Calcarea carb. Treatment was started in April 86 and terminated in November 86 as the patient was cured and since then the patient has been seen occasionally for acute ailments and her thyroid status has remained normal.

He has also presented another case of hyperthyroidism, which arose from frustration at work and increased responsibility towards his mentally retarded son, which further resulted in endogenous depression. In his case causticum was the remedy.

Dr Barvalia advises that whenever a doctor comes across a chronic disease preceded by disappearance of some other illness he should suspect syndrome shift and explore whether the new illness is a result of suppression.

INDIAN JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINE
Vol 32 No 3&4 1997

This issue of IJHM is devoted to the sexual dysfunction. Dr Praful Barvalia, the editor, states that a dynamic study of sexual passion of Homoeopathic prototypes will give us insight into human sexuality, its impact on shaping of personality and its ramifications in the world of inter-personal relationships. It also allows understanding of various ways in which different people deal with this aspect;

  • Phos has strong desire, requires lot of caressing and love.

  • Flouric-acid rapidly changes partner; gratification difficult.

  • Writing under the caption "A conceptual model for human sexuality" Dr Prakash Kothari deals exhaustively with this topic; spending time with patients is a must. Organic problems responsible for sexual dysfunctions are many, and most often a patient consults his family physician but not a consultant, which is the problem. (NJH Editor: People will only consult the family physician, as they are closest to him. In my view, the solution is to train family physician to handle majority of problems) Myths about masturbation, value of semen, penis size are common and need to be cleared, which reduces anxiety and allows rectification.

  • Dr Hitesh Shah finds in practice that the western method of sex education and counselling may not work in India with its different social background and upbringing. In such cases the administration of the appropriate Homoeopathic remedies rectifies anxieties, fears and improved the psyche. He cites four cases to illustrate his viewpoint.

  • Dr Shirish C Malde discusses a case of a woman, who abhorred sexual intercourse after an attempted sexual molestation in office. Cured with Platina along with counseling. Another case study of male dyspareunia in a 36-year-old male, Arg-nit helped. He states that because of multitude of causative factors, case taking should be comprehensive including evaluation of the sexual history. Also discussed erectile dysfunction & management.

  • Under the section on Differential World of Materia Medica, two cases where Bismuth helped two young boys, where the remedy selection hinged on the characteristic symptom of always clinging to their mothers and wanting to have them nearby always.

  • Dr Barvalia discusses the psychological and psychosomatic dimensions in Thyroid disorders. States of extreme anxiety or hostile irritability may arise from emotional tension leading to thyroid dysfunction. Differentiating hyperthyroidism and anxiety neurosis is difficult: In hyperthyroidism the appetite is characteristically increased while in anxiety neurosis it is reduced.

  • He discusses two cases of thyroid disorders in which Natrum-mur and Kali-bich were selected mainly on mental symptoms.
