HOMEOPATHY TODAY
Jan-Mar 2002
Monthly journal of the National Center for Homoeopathy, 801, N Fairfax
Street, Suite 306, Alexandria VA 22314, USA
The January issue of this journal contains interesting discussions on the role
of homoeopathy in combating bio-terrorism. In a presentation before the US House
of Representatives Committee on Governmental Reform Dr Joyce Frye pointed out
"Homoeopathic medicine has a two hundred year history of success in the
treatment and prophylaxis of thousands of cases of epidemic diseases.
Additionally it uses in the treatment of anxiety and the effects of trauma and
shock. Yet public health officials in our current crisis are overlooking it-
Certainly modern methods of treatment, such as antibiotics for anthrax should
not be abandoned in favour of homoeopathy. However there is definitely an
adjunct role for homoeopathy that should be investigated. In epidemic disease
homoeopathy works equally well both for viral and for bacterial agents and may
be life saving when antibiotics are ineffective and supportive measures
insufficient." For anthrax poisoning Anthracinum, Arsenicum-alb and
Crotalus-horridus are useful she said.
An article discusses the efficacy of homoeo medicines in emergencies such as
blunt trauma, eye injuries, musculoskeletal injury fractures etc A detailed write up on a seminar conducted by Alfons Guekons , a famous Homoeopath, is also included in this issue.. He
bases his practice on the 6th edition of Organon. In his view everyone is born with a constitutional state and expresses disease when he confronts a situation to which his constitution is susceptible. To determine whether a constitutional or a situational medicine is to be practiced, he asks the patient the question "what has happened in your life?" He cited a case of a woman having a lump sensation and impaired hearing in her left ear; she was earlier cured of a tumor in her abdomen by her constitutional remedy Sepia. He gave her the same remedy in 10M potency, which caused aggravation. Her
hearing complaint temporarily receded but returned. Thinking that a situational
medicine was called for, he inquired about what had happened before these
symptoms appeared. The patient said that she was involved in an auto accident at
Italy and recounted the mortification she suffered at the hands of Italian
police. Ignatia prescribed on these symptoms cured her.
2. March 2002 issue highlights the importance and efficacy of homoeopathic
medicines in dealing with torn tendons and fractures and contains two
interesting personal accounts of a torn ligament and hip fracture where apart
from Arnica, Strontium. Ruta and Ledum and Symphytum etc. were used and
the patients recovered to the astonishment of the surgeons who earlier advised
surgery.
3.There is a report on the presentation by Allison Maslon on eating disorders.
According to the statistics presented 7 million women and 1 million men suffer
from eating disorders. These are persons who are so obsessed with their body
image and food, that they do not lead normal life. 10-20% of anorexics will die
of complications; female models are 23% below normal weight; 70-80% of fourth
standard students in USA were found to be dieting as they said that they would
rather die than be fat. This arises from negative self- image and those in their
childhood did not receive love, nurturing touch etc do not develop healthy views
of themselves. She had listed 50 homoeopathic remedies and Chicory and Crab
Apple of Bach flower remedies as suitable and to be prescribed on the
totality of the case; more often the conflict of to be or not to be in this
world (Hydrogen)and motherchild relationships (muriaticums) hold the key in
these cases. |
HOMEOPATHY TODAY
Aug 2002
1. This issue is devoted to homoeopathy in summer complaints with
therapeutic hints on useful remedies. Dr Rosemary Hyde discusses in detail a
case of her friend who suffered from heat exhaustion and she arrived at Gelsemium
based on generals and modalities from the patient’s symptoms of lassitude,
Dullness, drowsiness, face hot and heavy, head constriction in occiput extending
to nape of neck, burning throat pain, extending to stomach etc.
2. Dr Ann Croce discusses in general the topic of suppression even by
Homoeopathic medicines. To avoid suppression it is necessary to make intelligent
choices about when not to treat and give medicines only when needed. If the case
is acute give acute remedies after careful evaluation of the symptoms and keep
an eye on whether it is an acute exacerbation of chronic illness.
3. The remedy of the month is Bufo-rana made from the poison of a toad.
The verse portion of this article is interesting and is reproduced
"Poor Bufo that lacks control.
Not endowed with mental grace
Tongue protrudes, a crack in fold.
A stupid look upon his face
Sudden sexual thoughts arise.
This sloppy toad cannot abate;
He goes off with his desire for solitude to masturbate
Imagine him a little fat; Angers at the drop of a hat;
And also laughs so indiscreet
like a child but not so sweet;
Impulsively must satisfy.
Every impulse gratify;
Has no shame on any sphere
Low of mind, speaks unclear;
Fears of animals and strangers too
Chilly and could sneeze for you;
Lacks refinement, is that clear ?
The toad is made of such, I fear"

HOMEOPATHY TODAY
Vol 22, No 11 Dec 2002
This journal, published in USA, has several articles on various topics. Dr Timothy Dooley has given cases of antibiotic overuse, who have responded well to Bell & Pulsatilla --- so that recourse to antibiotics by patients is avoided. Miranda Castro has given remedies for this. She mentions Influenzinum, Aconite, Fer-phos, Ars-alb, Baptisia, Bryonia, Eup-perf, Gels, Merc-sol, Nux-vom, Pyrogen and Rhus-tox.
A case of unexplained weakness diagnosed as post viral weakness was given gesemium by Nancy Gahles. Miranda Castro gives us details of Gelsemium in the "Remedy of the month" section. There are a few book reviews. A case by Linda Klarkentin of a paralysed dog, who respondedto Conium, completes th issue.

HOMOEOPATHY TODAY
Vol 23 Jan 2003
The highlights of this issue are the topics of SAD-Seasonal
Affective Disorder and small pox threat.
Dr Miranda Castro: In her article on SAD- describes the
symptoms as Depression, loss of libido, sluggishness, unrefreshing sleep,
difficult sleep, loss of creativity and craving for heavy food. SAD is mostly
worse in autumn and better in spring. She also mentions dos and don’ts of SAD,
body clocks and relevance of considering the whole picture. Medicines useful are
Amon-carb, Aurum-met, Phosphorous, RT and Sepia.
Dr Amy Rothenberg: Selene, a teacher’s aide in new
England had all the complaints of SAD. Her depression started before six years
A/F numerous deaths in her family. She dreaded the winter. Her complaints were
headache and eyestrain. Her case was analysed by "Cycles and segment"
method. (for information, see www.nesh.com).
Claustrophobia was the theme and Nat-mur the remedy.
After the medicine, she said that she never suffered from cold sores in 7
months. This complaint was not elicited during her earlier visit.
Dr Tod A Hoover: In this "must read" article on
small pox, Dr Tedd covers interesting facts about weaponized small pox,
vaccination, its side effects and effectiveness, the Homoeopathic debate,
prevention of small pox and Homoeopathic medicines for vaccinia syndrome. There
is enough proof of efficacy of the vaccination programme but the author warns
that what we have seen historically, what is little known in the allopathic
community is that Homoeopathy can offer great help. Requests are made to
increase research into Homoeopathic medicines in case an epidemic bursts out. Thuja,
Antim-tart, Silicea, Belladonna, Malandrinum and Variolimum are
discussed for vaccinia syndrome.
Dr Karen Allen: She searched the Library of University of
California and found the mention of saracenia-purpura in the 1874 issue
of the Homoeopathic world. This plant is also known as the Indian cup. Between
Jan and July 1871 above 2000 people who used it as a prophylactic, in spite of
living in infected districts were not affected by small pox. The remedy is made
from tincture of the fresh pitcher plant. Pitcher plants are classified as
carnivorous because they consume variety of bugs as well as frogs! This then
gets mixed and dissolved with dew, raindrops and digestive juices of the plant.>
This unusual diet helps the plant to survive in deficiency of
soil and water. It would be helpful to put all this under the scrutiny of
scientific research.
This issue also features an interview with Dr Rudolph
Ballentine who is one of the 30 people inducted into the "Hall of
Fame" by natural Health Magazine. He was studying with Swami Ram who said
"If you want to be a good psychiatrist, you must learn Homoeopathy".
Thus began his journey of Homoeopathy and the book on radical
healing followed. He says, healing is really about expanding of our
consciousness. The whole spiritual path is about expanding and integrating so
that your sense of who you are becomes greater. "Radical Healing" is
about diet, breath and Homoeopathy and the detoxification, healing crisis,
throwing off, releasing of past and the increased awareness that follows. We
find a touching tribute to Dr Henry N Williams - a Gentleman Homoeopath.
Lastly, not to forget the president’s caution ‘is being a
good Homoeopath enough?’ - where he cured a child’s asthma with staphysagria
but the child became ‘bold’, had courage to back answer the father and
spoil the fine family scene! The family never returned back to him in spite of
the cure. So he cautions: it is vital to see the whole picture and determine
what type of effect the medicine will have on the family system.
The editor voices his stand on standardising Homoeopathic education and his
concerns over compulsory vaccination law by the US Govt where the penalty for
breaking the law includes jail and confiscation of property! The law provides
that vaccine companies (especially Elli Lilly) will be exempt from any
responsibility for any damages! No wonder the CEO of the company is President
Bush’s Budget director!

The research article by Jennifer Jacobs completes the issue. She mentions:
there is enough evidence to prove that Homoeopathy is effective. British Medical
Journal 2000 shows that fever sufferers were given Placebo and
Homoeopathic medicines. Homoeopathy had 28% improvement in nasal airflow
compared to Placebo. Also mentioned are studies of childhood diarrhoea
and Head injury. A metanalysis of 107 clinical trials of Homoeopathy; of the 22
best quality studies, 15 showed positive results in hay fever.

HOMOEOPATHY TODAY
Vol 23, March 2003
Theme of issue: Menopause:
Apart from the commonly used Sepia, Lachesis and Natrum, Dr
Dooley, Dr Castro and Dr Master mention other medicines in their articles.
a) Glonoine: Sudden, hot flushes with upward rush of blood and
palpitation. Also nausea and fainting feeling. In mentals - often forgets
things and scared to go out alone.
b) Sanguinaria: Burning heat , less violent then Glonoine and not
as weak as Sepia.
c) Sulphur: The feet are hot, craving for sweets and hunger in the
morning. Weepy and feels out off from people.
d) Amyl-nitrate: Drenching sweats, tremendous anxiety. The cause may be
emotional excitement or grief. Extremely fearful and feeling that something
horrible is going to happen. Requires a lot of support.
e) Trilium: Anxiety with restlessness. Often there will be uterine
hemorrhage.
f) Asteria-rubens: Estranged during menopause. Emotional upsets or
conflict with family members. Del dirty she is - stems from low self esteem
and poor body image.
g) Androctonus: When Anxiety with fear during menopause is prominent,
this is the first remedy to be considered. The cause may be sexual abuse,
persecuted at work or not being appreciated. Forsaken feeling, feels alone and
like a stranger. Feels I am not strong enough to fight, how will I face the
world? < 10 pm and midnight.
h) Cyclamen: Indifference, apathy in menopause, strong desire to live a
perfect, meticulous, duty conscious life but while doing so, turns
hypersensitive to slightest mistake or defect. Tendency to paint a darker
picture of situations facing her guilt and self reproach. Bears moral
responsibility for the world. ‘Delusion - neglected their duty’. ‘Delusion
- committed a crime’. H/o heavy flow, less thirst, cr well as aversion to
fat.
Ruins a whole family - Dr Dooly in his article also mentions that HRT study
in US that was to continue for 8 years, was stopped within 5 years, as the women
taking actual hormone were at increased risk of breast cancer, stroke, heart
disease and pulmonary embolus. Women were angry because they had been convinced
by their health case provides that they would be irresponsible if they did not
take HRT.
Dr Bonnie Rotenberg: When she was diagnosed with CA uterus, she resorted to Aurum-met.
The cancer did not increase, when the surgery was scheduled, Arnica for
some bruised feeling, Phosphorus for raised and Staphysagria when
pain became stabbing. These three medicines completely eliminated the need for a
pain killer.
An interesting letter by Randall Neustadter initiates a healthy debate on
vaccination. He feels a further scrutiny is required regarding Dr Hoover’s
article on small-pox vaccination and its efficacy. His points are: a) Reliable
data are space as to efficacy and durability of protection afforded by vaccines.
b) Number of victims who had never received small-pox vaccine was nearly
equivalent to the number of cases with a history of vaccination in the previous
10 years. c) There is abundant evidence that vaccination does not prevent
epidemics. To this Dr Hoover replies that the conclusions drawn are one sided.
Yet both of them agree over the common facts like: The overall effect of
smallpox vaccine is of limited duration. Even having the disease itself is not a
guarantee. 1 in 1000 may develop small-pox second time. Most people will loose
immunity in 5-10 years. b) Favouring isolation of the victim would be an
acceptable approach during attack but not necessarily stop the spread of the
disease. c) Severe side effects and limited efficacy are most significant. We
need more supporting data for efficacy of Hom medicine.
