HOMEOPATHY TODAY
Nov'98

The Highlights of the Nov 98 Issue::
Dr Ramakrishnan , the cancer specialist, has also wide experience in treating eye problems . He uses Sanicula in cases of muscular degeneration with the symptom of wavy vision; he also reports success with Vanadium 200 in these cases. Many glaucoma cases are one sided and there is no clear remedy and in these cases he uses Apis, if the patient is thirstless; Physostigma if there is a family history of glaucoma and Glonoine if there is hypertension and renal disease, he recommends 200 C every 15 days for two months. He will alternate with the constitutional remedy if it is evident.

In a seminar Dr Alice Timmerman made the following points:

  • Lac-humanum mental states are feelings of isolation, estrangement, and detachedness. The two patients who were treated by this remedy displayed a strong craving for ginger and they rocked back and forth and or side to side during consultation. 30th and 200th potencies with plussing worked well.
  • Nosodes are often indicated when the symptoms are taking over the whole personality and the individual can not develop. In children when there is blockage of their development.
  • She stressed the importance of helping the patients find the centre of their emotional pain and unless they are conscious of it, they will deteriorate. Often a part of the psyche will get stuck when the trauma was experienced or when the disease manifested. As the healing progresses, that part of the psyche gets released and the patient will continue their process of development. She demonstrated this in a video case where a 55 year old woman moved from sucking her thumb to playing with dolls to developing childhood illnesses all the way through to maturity. (!)
An important tip given is the efficacy of Oxalic-acid in the case of adopted children who suffered from varying types of attachment disorder with feelings of abandonment and separation. An interesting sidelight was the fact that cuckoo bird, notorious for abandoning her young ones in the nest of other birds, feeds on plants which contain oxalic acid. Here there is also a craving for strawberries but it aggravates.

Writing on the Homoeopathic treatment of hypertension, Dr Will Taylor points out that many hypertension cases are likely to be one-sided cases. Here one is apt to over read the physical generals and mental and emotional symptoms and decide on a remedy on a weak basis. He suggests that when the case is really one-sided (Aphorisms 175 and 176), we should use hypertension remedies for starters and then zig-zag into the similimum.

This issue carries an obituary of Dr Edward Whitmont, who passed away on 21-9-98. He was a famous Homoeopath and integrated his practice of Homoeopathy with Jungian psychiatry. He wrote The Symbolic Quest, Psyche and Substance: essays on Homoeopathy in the light of Jungian Psychology (which many would have read), The return of the Goddess and The Alchemy of Healing.
Seminar Reports, Homoepathy for animals and book reviews complete the issue.

HOMEOPATHY TODAY
May 1999 Volume 19, No 5

  • Dr Ullman says that the appropriate remedy in each case can be determined through understanding the nature and form of the medicinal substance, such as the characteristics of the three kingdoms (animal, plant and mineral) as suggested by Dr Rajan Sankaran and Jan Scholten. They cite a case of a 30 year old nurse who was sexually abused by her own brothers since the age of five. In later life, she was never able to trust anyone; her self-worth was negligible; she hated her parents for not protecting her. She frequently dreamt of someone coming into her bedroom in the night to abuse her sexually; she also saw rattlesnakes in her dreams. The doctors said that because of this approach they could arrive at Crotalus-cascavella which provided good relief.
  • Report on a seminar on SPIDER REMEDIES by Dr Anne Schadde, a German Homoeopath. Latrodectus -mactans, Tarentula and Aranea-diadem, Ixobola and Mygale were discussed. Latrodectus is a remedy for managers who end up in hospitals as a result of professional stress.
  • Report on the presentation of Opium by Cyrus Wood, which is one of the three major head injury remedies, along with Arnica and Nat-sulph. The keynote is insensitivity to pain, numbing of the affected part or dullness resulting from the trauma, fear or terror. Accompanied by stupefaction and dullness, even to the point of coma.
  • Phases of the remedy: in the second phase there is excitement, bliss, rage insomnia, workaholism, hurriedness and impatience; cursing during sleep and lack of conscience and moral authority. If a patient says that he has a high threshold of pain but does not have pain that he ought to have, consult the rubric- Generalities, painlessness of complaints usually painful. For difficulty getting up in the morning, look at " stupefaction, rouses with difficulty". For an indifferent attitude, " Indifferent"; for an attitude of little interest look up" Ennui". If he says that he has a good imagination see " ideas abundant". If he speaks of illegal activities and taking chances while driving, one has to see " audacious, courageous". If he feels amoral look at " Moral affections, want of moral feeling" or " shameless".
DD: Staph has sensitivity to embarrassment and shame, inability to express anger, incredible rage to the point of killing and the inability to confront someone. Natrum-mur has homesickness, ailments from grief, dwelling on past disagreeable events with loquacity. Morphninum is more extreme than Opium in that the person blames others more, greater denial about his state to the point of lying to himself. Is loquacious but lacks embarrassment and fears. Lac-can shares delusions of animals, dreams of faces and flying, delusions and distortions of body parts. According to Dr Wood, the people who need milk remedies are typically not as sharing and as generous as those who need drug remedies; he pointed out that drug addicts share their drugs.

HOMEOPATHY TODAY
Vol19 No8 Sep'99

This issue contains a report on the seminar given by Dr Misha Norland in March 1999.It was mentioned that some provers had taken AIDS nosode prepared from the blood of an AIDS patient. In an increasingly populated world, we are faced with problems of overcrowding and boundary issues but at the same times several people feel alienated and rejection like AIDS victims. This new proving will be a valuable addition to our repertoire.(This proving as well as others carried out by the School of Homoeopathy in UK is stated to be available at the website www.homeopathyschool.com. Dr Norland also discussed a case of Stram where the present symptoms exhibited the opposite polarity of the past. According to Dr Norland, only when the doctor has a complete rapport with the patient, can he understand the feeling of the case and the central idea( which subsequently materializes as physical pathology) one can then find the rubrics and the remedy.

Dr Chris Carlisle discusses a case of a woman, 37 weeks pregnant, suffered from false labour pains and white discharge, with abdominal pain and possible URTI. After initial allopathic treatment there was increased bleeding and foetal distress. Her placenta had detached prematurely with hemorrhage .A ceasarian was performed and the infant taken out. After surgery the haemoglobin count was low due to excessive blood loss and she received a blood transfusion. She was continuously treated with allopathic medication and she developed distended abdomen with vaginal offensive discharge. At this stage a Homoeo prescription of Raphanus 30; though her incarcerated flatus was relieved, she had difficulty in voiding urine and hence catheter was inserted and reinserted depending on the progress; this made the patient very uncomfortable .She was then given Causticum on the basis of acute anxiety and paralysis of bladder, retention of urine after delivery, after surgery. Within 30 minutes of administration of the medicine the residual urine was voided. A month later the patient sought advice for continuous vaginal and offensive discharge and uterus remaining hard with inability to bend. She was prescribed Secale-c on the basis of following rubrics:-Female. Gen, lochia offensive, fetid (KR 723)

( KR 723)Lochia protracted
(KR 723)Lochia ichorus
(KR 722) leucorrhoea offensive and putrid and greenish
( KR 741) pain sore, uterus

Under continued taking of Secale 200 twice a day she felt improved and her retained products, the cause of uterine infection, were ejected. .The discharge also stopped for a time. After about 10 days she again had discharge and pain in abdomen. Secale 1M did not relieve her fully and again after repertorising the case, Sabina given and her discharge ceased. While her physical symptoms were thus cured she became angry and annoyed for the unduly long time taken for the cure and inability to cope with a colicky baby. She was given Staph 1M -3 doses which reduced her irritability and then Sepia completed the cure.

Some of the issues which the author has raised which are relevant to all the Homoeopaths are:-

  • What are the ethics of treating someone with a life threatening infection with homoeopathy?
  • Can Homoeopathy work well when taking conventional medication?
  • Is Homoeopathy appropriate in a hospital setting?
  • Is there a complemenatary approach?
(The answer is clear and that Homoeopathy can act as a very complementary medical treatment in these cases provided the modern medicinal doctors appreciate our support to alleviate the suffering and cure the patient. Only in such circumstances with back up allopathic support available Homoeopathy can cure such difficult cases with least discomfort. This case has demonstrated clearly the efficacy of Homoeo medicine in removing the incarcerated flatus after surgery and for ejecting the poisoning placenta)
