BRITISH HOMOEOPATHIC JOURNAL WITH SIMILIE
Vol 88 No 1 January 1999

Of late, interest in spider remedies seems to be increasing. Toxicology of Latrodectus-hasselti, an Australian red back spider: Venom affects most of the organs particularly the CNS and pain - head, face, chest abdomen and joints. Severe abdominal pain can be a dominant feature in children. The mind symptoms: delusion of flying, constant, persistent weakness, lethargy dull and heavy feeling memory loss.

Sicarius spider is a six-eyed crab spider, found in South Africa, Central and South America. Its venom causes symptoms very similar to those of Ebola haemorrhagic fever. So this remedy may be homoeopathic to the dreaded fever and might be given as a prophylactic in those regions. A Homoeopathic preparation of the virus itself may be curative. (Editor: difficult to make a remedy from a virus!)

Other MM notes and tips:
Seven venoms:

  • Bothrops is unreliable in thrombosis and is more indicated in cerebral hemorrhages.
  • Cenchris is used in thrombosis
  • Crotalus-horridus and Elaps for acute haemorrhages.
  • Elaps for strokes due to arterial thrombosis
  • Lachesis for purpura.
  • Naja-tripudians specific action on myocardium; angina and MI
  • Vipera for superficial thrombosis and hepatitis. (Maurice Guers)
Ambra-grisea needs to please and to hide and has a bad self-image. A remedy for people who have failed. Sometimes hysterical, a very shy patient.

Some peculiar symptoms: lack of reaction in acute danger, in nervous people; in nervous asthma in children, nervous cough, painful warts on hands, tennis elbow, metrorrhagia at the least cause, even < long walk or hard stool. There is premature aging, both physical and mental. (Dr Jaques Lamothe)

  • There are several types of Sepia
The witch - prophetess - magician (visionary dreams); the gypsy dancer
    (dancing desire); the courtesan
(eccentricity) and the shrew (anger from contradiction) and Cinderella
(depressed). Lesser-known symptoms: external throat; AGG clothing, feeling of a plug in larynx, fever MB & MA
  • Iridium appears close to Platina - in sexual excitement, pain in Lt ovary, delusion larger or taller than in reality, to see things smaller than in reality. It has high ambitions but is afraid to lose; does not have the arrogance of Platina even if he has an inflated self-confidence. Iridium wants to communicate and has empathy which is absent in Platina.
    (Dr Phillipe Colin)
  • Solanum-tuberosum (rotten potato)
Great irritability, feels wretched and broods about future; cephalgia as if the brain would burst. Oedema- face; stomatitis, constipation or diarrhoea with great distension, stiffness neck and violent dorsal and lumbar pains, reddish urine with mucus and pains
AGG by pressure, sleep and cold water.
    (Dr Micheline Delthombe)

BRITISH HOMOEOPATHIC JOURNAL
Vol 88 No3 July'99

The guest editorial of this issue stresses the need for establishing a monitoring system for reporting and evaluating adverse effects of Homoeopathic medicines. This issue contains three original papers on effects of Homoeopathic mineral complex on carrageenan induced oedema in rats, Homoeopathic effect on heart rate variability by administering Strophanthus-hispidus 30. Dr Hahnemann observed that secondary effect occurred following the primary effect of medicines in order to neutralise the initial disturbance, from which the law of similars was established. In one paper an attempt has been made from the published pharmacopoeia the secondary effect of modern medicines after the discontinuation of the drugs. Some examples are:-

Anti-angina drugs:
Patients who use nitroglycerine for a long-term have angina attacks more frequently.

Anti-hypertensive drugs:
Arterial hypertension, sympathetic hyperactivity, with rebound hypertension may occur in a period of 2-7 days after the abrupt withdrawal of Gunafacine with a greater risk if doses above 4mg a day. The abrupt withdrawal of oral Cloidine results in a rapid increase of systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings.

  • Another original paper brings out the similarities and dissimilarities between Dr Bach's flower remedies and Homoeopathy with a chart indicating the Homoeopathic remedies corresponding to the Bach flower remedies as regards mental symptoms.
  • Dr L De Schepper discusses the LM potencies evolved by Dr Hahnemann and explained in the 6th edition of Organon. The practical methods of LM prescribing and the advantages of such potencies in curing diseases are elaborated in detail.
  • Book reviews, reproduction from the Journal's issue 20 yrs ago, abstracts from other Journals, form the rest of the issue.

Homoeopathy
(formerly British HomJournal): Vol. 2 April 2003

This issue is for studious, research-inclined readers who always need ‘proof’ of a cure. ‘Weighing the homeopathic evidence’ gives data of various conditions like lay fever, influenza, URT, childhood diarrhoea, sprains and pains whose overall result faiths the efficiency of Hom. Treatment. The research on cost-effectiveness of Hom in general practice is very encouraging. The study of 109 Patients with average of 4 months treatment showed that the average saving per patients was £ 60.40. Only one patient reported side effects, ninty-two patients improved and none had deteriorated. R T Mathie writes about research evidence base for Hom. The author analyzed 93 research papers since 1975 from which 50 papers reported benefit of Hom, 41 fails to discern any intergroup differences - and 2 describe inferior response to Hom. Thus there is need for better directed research with fresh agenda of enquiry. Also given is the original paper on a research study of Hom aggravatious. Peter Viksveen in this article writes about antibiotic resistance as a public health problem, use of Hom as an alternative, increasing number of patients using Hom and conditions like sinusitis, give ear in children, and other where Hom was not only effective but also economical.

R. Itamura and R Hosoya’s article on intractable atopic dermatitis gives interesting cases, repertorized and treated with Staphysagria-the fear of insects and A/F mortification were key to the case and another where Pulsatilla helped the weepy, introspective patient with changeable moods.

In a thought provoking guest editorial Paolo Bellavite initiates a debate to bridge the gap between miasms and modern pathology, based on Montfort Cabellos bold attempt to correspond miasms with advances in cellular pathology. The concept of miasms is the most difficult to explain in Homoeopathy. In modern terms, miasms can be explained as 'reactional mode'. Today terms like predisposition and diathesis are better adapted.

According to contemporary views,

  • PSORA- dysimmunosis or altered immune response.
  • SYPHILIS is dysmorphogenesis or inherited defect and
  • SYCOSIS is dysmetabolosis or defect in enzyme catabolic pathways.

The biological and biochemical view explains psora as a defect or malfunction in ATP generation, characterized by recurrent, inflammatory and allergic reaction.

Syphilis is characterized by chronic or permanent destructive changes and the inherited mutation is located in the DNA.

Sycosis has proliferation, chronic muco-purulent discharges and oedema. This is due to enhanced permeability of the lipid structure of cellular and nuclear membranes.

Thus understanding miasms with their modern reinterpretation will aid understanding the paths of cellular repair, by we can further explain and explore Homoeopathy.

E S Rajendran narrates 3 cases of cancer viz metastatic Adenocarcinoma of rectum, terminal squamous cell carcinoma of the cheek and cancer of larynx in elderly patients.

  1. Patient with Rectal cancer refused surgery. Lycopodium 30 based on repertorial rubrics. Mind: Mild, likes company, hurry, craving non-veg, back perspiration, tongue coated, cracks heels, longitudinal nail cracks and cancer of rectum. He improved well, lived a normal life for 3 years and died peacefully.
  2. Squamous cell Ca, the patient was operated but analgesics not effective to reduce pain. Cal-carb 30 on constitutional basis relieved her pain.
  3. In Ca larynx, the patient also had fistula in ano, bleeding piles and chronic pharyngitis with suppurative otitis media. Ferrum-phos 0/3 15 drops TDS OD. In 4 months 20-9-2002 he is free from all complaints. Thus Homoeopathy acts as a good supportive therapy in operated cancer patients.

Other articles include evaluation of GP based Homoepathic practice, evidence based repertory, 'Cure' as gold standard and anti-inflammatory activity of Arnica.

Writes about interesting but little known facts about Trifolium pretence. Modern studies confirm the anti-tumoral, anti-inflammatory and oestrogenic effects of Trifolium due to the isoflavones present in its leaves. Author and her colleague took 20 granules once a week for 6 weeks and both of them had early menses with decrease of breast tension. The same effect was noticed with a single dose. Based on this subjective experience, the author used this medicine in cases of hyperoestrogenia and lower potency was used in low estrogen with family history of cancer.

She has given seven cases of breast cancer where Trifolium immensely benefited the patients in reducing the tumour size, also normal mammography reports, increased energy levels, optimistic attitude and no relapse. In a case of amenorrhea of 3 months with anovulatory cycle, hirsutism and cystic breasts, the reports showed low levels of oestrogens and progesterone with high levels of testosterone. Constitutional Nat-mur and Trifolium 200 c infrequently given helped to bring the oestrogen levels to normal with regular menses. She suggests a new rubric: mind refuge in disease for this remedy and further scientific research.

P Rosenvaum has presented a case of Elaps in a case of Adenocarcinoma of rectum in a 70 yrs old woman. Post surgery she presented with anxiety especially on leaving the house owing to discomfort and embarrassment, fear of snakes even on TV and other complications after surgery. Her key symptoms taken into account were dreams of falling, desire/aversion of oranges and dreams of snakes. Elaps 31K 1 drop daily was gradually increased to 90k 1 drop daily. Follow up of 1 year showing improvement in all the symptoms except for pain in coccyx. The interesting feature of the case was vertically elongated pupils seldom seen in humans. It is characteristic of coral snakes.

Other topics of interest include study of toxicology of black widow spider, pitfalls of case research and patient practitioner remedy.
