BRITISH HOMOEOPATHIC JOURNAL WITH SIMILIE
Vol 83 No 2 April 94

Manu Kotharis article, "Dysis vs Disease" is thought provoking as usual. The editor, Dr. Mistry describes Dr. Kothari as Ivon Ilich of India. Articles in Homoeopathy are relevant and very useful in practice even if 30 years old. Dr. Lakshminarayans article on Arnica gives an indepth study of the remedy with its usage ranging from injury to vitiligo. Nat-mur helped a case of Nephrotic syndrome reports Dr. S.R. Wadia. Dr. Mistry's cases of Mumps and Pancreatitis, Chronic rhinitis with myalgic pain in lower limbs, Bells palsy, Gall bladder dysfunctions, Haemophilia, Oligospermia, Anal Fistula etc. make interesting reading. Dr. Shinde reports a case of CSF rhinorrhoea treated with Teucrium 30. On stepping the potency. Dr. Shinde found an aggravation setting in. Teucrium 30 given again cured the patient. (Proves that potency is as important as remedy selection). Dr. S. Irani reports a case of TB treated with acupressure and Homoeopathic remedies. Dr. Misras case of Cyst treated with Pyrogen and Lac-can is also reported. The remaining part of the issue carries book reviews, abstracts from journals and seminar reports.

Dr.Girish Gupta in his Editorial stresses on the wrong diet restrictions imposed by Homoeopaths. He questions how a Homoeopathic drug could face strong hydrochloric acid of the gastric juice if it is liable to get neutralized by use of spices, vinegar, coffee, tobacco etc. how could it tolerate most pungent hydrogen sulfide gas present in the bowels if it could loose its pharmacological property by coming in contact with garlic and onion.

Fungal deterioration of paper material are of great concern in tropical countries like India where temperature and humidity are more favourable for their onset, growth and persistence. Antifungal effect of Homoeo drugs against pathogenic fungi have been reported by various workers in the past. However Garg, Mishra and Gupta have gone a step farther. The fungi responsible for biodeterioration of old books were isolated by cotton swab and paper stick methods on cellulose agar media. Aspergillus niger., cephalosporium coremoides, Paecilomyces variotii and starchiomyces Kurchellomyces were isolated. Aspergillus niger being dominant, six Homoeopathic remedies in various potencies were tried out to evaluate their inhibitory effect on isolated culture of the fungi, under in vitro conditions. Out of these remedies Sulfur-iodatum 1M and Petroleum 30 were found more effective. This study will go a long way in protection of paper materials.

A single medicine Hygrophilic-spinosa cured a 40 years old man suffering from hairy cell leukemia and gave him relief from severe headache for the last 30 years, red nodular urticaria eruptions, insomnia for 15 years and constipation since childhood. Urticaria aggravated with rise of temperature in fever is a characteristic symptom of the remedy Parimal Banerjee and S.Mukherjee carried our a clinical research on a huge number of labour and delivery cases They suggest standardization of treatment in labour and delivery - giving specific drugs applicable to majority.

There are reports of clinical trials of Homoeopathic drugs in the treatment of malignant tumours but very few attempts have been made to assess the therapeutic values of such drugs. The present study deals with antitumour activity of kali Mur, Phytolacca, Hydrastis and Zincum Met in murine models. The experiments by Thomas Maliekal showed that the administration of Zincum and Kali Mur can produce significant inhibitory effects and consequent increase in life span of the tumor bearing mice.

Dr.Richard Fox answers questions on L.M. potency and its practical usage.

All in all an issue devoted to scientific research which has been lacking in the field of Homoeopathy.

Harris Coulters ARTICLE Divided Legacy tries to make evident the existence of a conflict in the therapeutics between what are called the Empirical and Rationalist therapeutic philosophies. Under this he discusses various topics like Symptoms, Pharmacology, Allergy, Vaccination etc giving explanation of empirical rationalist thoughts on the above topics. Last but not the least Coulter affirms that the empirical-rationalist dualism are also at work within Homoeopathy. The former were those who adhered to Hahnemanns original and strictly Empirical formulation of the rules of homoeopathic practice. The latter, constituting the majority of Homoeopaths, rejected Hahnemanns original formulation and preferred a doctrine modelled along the Rationalist lines of the prevailing allopathic therapeutic mode. By taking the most important symptoms of a remedy and connecting them in different ways, we get to see the different faces of the remedy. This helps us not to get fixed on one image. Corrie Hiwat studies Cocculus-indicus by grouping together different important symptoms. The Cocculus situations are that of cares, worries and care taking.

Elizabeth Morris is an accredited counsellor, who through her study complementary health practitioners, which includes homoeopaths, of stress by giving tips on personal management. Thomas L Maugham (1901-76) was well known teacher in U K. A sketch of his life is narrated by Peter Morrell. Reproduced from volumes F of the classical Homoeopathic Lectures of Dr Vassilis Ghegas are remedies and their characteristic symptoms in liver disorders.

BRITISH HOMOEOPATHIC JOURNAL and SIMILIE
Vol87 No3 July 1998

Discussing the issue of randomized, placebo controlled trials of classical Homoeopathy, the Guest editorial comes to the conclusion that there may be a problem with such trials in the sense that they are most likely to lead to false negative results, than other types of trials. This does not mean that experimental epidemiology and Homoeopathy are incompatible and may well answer important questions concerning Homoeopathy.

Late Dr RAF Jack, a leading Homoeopath practicing in Worcestershire, started giving out a remedy pack of Homoeo remedies to patients for first aid because of the number of patients he had to see, as far back as 1956; such packs were continued even today. A survey of 100 users of such packs was conducted in Feb 1995 and it indicated that Chamomilla, Bell and Arnica were used in about 31 conditions but largely used for tooth ache, injuries and colds both in adults and children with good results in 55 %.

The notion that individuals differ in their physical and psychological make-up and these differences predispose them to various illnesses. There are three interesting articles on constitution and Homoeopathic constitutional remedy. The following points emerge from these articles:-

  • The constitution is the habitual state of the patient; Constitutional characteristics may be reflected in the symptoms if they become exaggerated during illness.
  • Prescriptions may be based on the constitutional similimum when it corresponds to the clinical similimum; a constitutional prescription should not be made if it does not correspond to the current clinical picture.
  • It is not always possible to identify the constitutional picture of an individual; the constitutional picture may be subsumed in the clinical picture of chronic illness.
  • The search for constitutional patterns in the patients may lead to over-prescribing of some of the well-known polycrests, inaccurate elimination of those that do not fit the stereotypes, and under-prescription of smaller but well-proved remedies. Rarely is any individual a pure type of constitution. A miasmatic layer may obscure the underlying constitution or the presence of acute illness or environmentally produced reactions.
  • Both psychiatry and Homoeopathy agree that constitution can be an important predictor of more serious pathology and may also direct the choice of treatment.
  • Dr Hahnemann himself, says Dr Vithoulkas in his article, stated that to cure completely and permanently, one needs to find the deeper indicated remedy according to his theory of the chronic miasms.
  • Dr Vithoulkas feels that the concept of constitutional remedy is very elusive and cannot be precisely applied. In his view, if a remedy can be identified as constitutional when by virtue of its symptomatology, it covers the basic chronic or acute symptoms of the person throughout his life, such persons are rare and can be found only in rural areas in an unpolluted environment. To suppose that a person remains well for the rest of his life after taking the so-called constitutional remedy is not correct and is not corroborated by the chronic cases, which we come across today. He poses some questions- If a patient is prescribed three or four remedies in the course of treatment based on the presenting symptoms and he becomes really better, how to determine what was the constitutional remedy when all of them acted well.
  • He says that one frequently sees in practice that a remedy was clearly indicated at the beginning of the case; after giving it there is no improvement but the symptoms change dramatically and require another remedy. In such a case which is the constitutional remedy, the first or the second? He feels that the hypothesis that a constitutional remedy is the remedy that will benefit the patient has no meaning apart from indicating that there is one remedy that is always indicated at a certain stage of pathology for each patient and should be prescribed. He points out that in every complicated case there is a precise sequence of remedies, that should be discovered after studying the case and correct evaluation of the symptoms and such sequence of remedies should be prescribed in the right time and at the right potency for a cure to take place. He illustrates his point with two cases; in one case a child with severe generalised neurodermatitis with coeliac disease did not respond to Puls. But after a dose of Tuberculin there was severe aggravation. After six months the symptoms changed and clearly indicated Puls and when it was given there was an immediate relief of dermatitis and amelioration of other symptoms including digestion; in this case which was the constitutional remedy? Tuberculinum? But it brought about severe aggravation, not a cure and it was necessary intermediate for Pul to act. Puls did not cure in the first place, he points out.
