NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 2004 Jul / Aug VOL VI NO 4.
Dr Leena Thorve

At first sight, the Shaad Hospital Complex and Research Centre could be one of the myriad institutions catering to the daily health needs of patients of Nagpur. But when Summer approaches, the entire building seems rejuvenated with a vibrant atmosphere. At the pivot of this enthusiasm is a magnum figure - our Guru - Dr Kasim Chimthanawala. The occasion is the 15 day post graduate residential summer gurukul and the venue is the Late Dr JN Kanjilal Memorial Hall. Says Dr Sarita Salunke from Pune - 'I have enrolled here to learn something beyond compare.

Although the discipline is strict and the schedule of 5am to 11pm is exhaustive, yet it infuses one with a new form of energy and confidence'. That's true echoes Dr Rajashree Pawar of Satara, 'here we have seen for the first time applied philosophy. The detailed miasmatic study of each case in which I understood the Volatile Anger of Psora, Depressive Phobia of Syphilis and a Hard nut to crack nature of Sycosis. Before coming here one only knew the name of miasms, but now we are able to perceive them in patients and prescribe accordingly.

In one corner, Dr Adi, was busy managing a case of a 52 yrs male who came with c/o Hypertension and suffocation. After thorough investigations - ECG, Echo, he was diagnosed as Acute Inferior Wall Myocardial Infarction and hospitalized. Dr Nikhil Bharne says, 'It is for the first time that I have seen homoeopathic management in emergency cases. I now realized how vital it is to diagnose each case Nosologically, Miasmatically, Constitutionally as well as to perceive the drugs in the acute stage.

Dr Manisha Mali of Sholapur comments 'Here we have undergone practical training sessions with Sagira Madam in labor management, planning and implementation of pre, peri and post operative homoeopathic management, analysis and interpretations of modern investigatory techniques and the use of our wonderful drug Pulsatilla for increasing the contraction during normal labor replacing Oxytocin drips to a great extent and Caulophyllum in cervical dystocia. These things are absolutely essential for any physician including a homoeopath'.

Two sisters Dr Ashoki and Dr Aroshi Talreja of Raipur quote that "We are specifically impressed by the various doctrines of the academy. We have been able to comprehend the Doctrines of Aetiopathogenesis, Evolution of sickness and disease, Elimination- ultimates and end results, Concomitants, Suppression, Palliation and Cure etc within this short span of time". Really homoeopathy is based on easily comprehensible principles.

Dr Yogesh Salunkhe says, 'The Doctrine of Aetiopathogenesis which is one of the important contributions of the Academy to the Homoeopathic field was explained by Kasim Sir most meticulously. A gist of what I understood is: Every living economy is destined to remain healthy and maintain the harmonious functioning through out its life without any problems. But there exists certain factors that contribute their might and render the economy sick. They are categorized under 4 major heads viz.

Predisposing Factors:
Hereditary
Familial
Diet
Modes of Living, etc.

Fundamental Causes: They are invisible dynamic disease producing potentials, render the economy susceptible for benign environmental onslaughts. They are:
Natural: Primary (Psora, Syphilis and Sycosis)
Compound: Tubercular, Cancer etc
Artificial: Drugs, Chemicals, Vaccinations etc.

Precipitating Factors: Factors which excites a vulnerable constitution. They can be
Living (microorganisms), Nonliving (allergens), Physical or Mental, Visible or Invisible etc

Maintaining/Promoting Factors: There are number of factors, which not only maintain the sickness, and its manifestations, but also provide enough manure for its development. Some are
- Diet, Modes of living, Environment (domestic, occupational, educational, social etc)
- Habits/addictions etc

On the second last day the participants had to present and defend their thesis on the subjects assigned to them. Dr Falgun Jasolia of Surat and Dr Amit Soni of Baroda say in unison, 'This is one time where apart from our knowledge we are judged in our oratory and communication skills. For the thesis we had exhaustive library sessions and included our case studies. In these 15 days we have read so many rare books, journals and other theses based on homoeopathy but still we are not satisfied and this makes us feel how vast homoeopathic literature is'.

Dr Brijesh Kakadia of Ahmedabad says, 'we have never taken so many cases, almost 100 in number, in our complete academic life, which we have taken here. Case taking sessions used to start early in the morning by 7 am. And the best part was we got to clear our doubts later when we discussed each of them with Sir'.

The last day after examinations was the Convocation ceremony where the post graduate certificates were awarded. Apart from Dr Kasim the other faculty members were - Prof Dr Sagira, Dr Sanjay Tambe, Dr Mehboob, Dr Adil, Fellow Tasneem, Dr Fatema Chimthanawala, Dr Pravesh Agrawal (Palwal), Dr Pramod Khandeshe (Mumbai) and Dr Jai Kukreja(Gwalior).

The prestigious Late Dr Thatte Memorial awards for the three top notchers went to Drs. Yogesh Salunkhe (Satara), Brijesh Kakadiya (Ahemdabad) and Sumit Modh (Bhopal) respectively.'The 13th Winter School shall be held in the first week of December 2004 and I am surely going to attend this school again to learn more and more as I feel one school is not enough for me' says Dr Balaji More of Nanded

What a happy ending was it for all 25 participants of this 13th Summer School.
