Love Affair with Carcinosin at the bedside

Introduction:
The vast deep sea of our Homoeopathic Materia Medica contains numerous
varied pearls of wisdom which illuminate many a patient’s life and guided
homoeopathis to produce miraculous results. One such pearl is drug Carcinosin.
Although very much synonymous with the word "Carcinoma" that
creates terror in anyone’s mind; this medicine, in the hands of an experienced
homoeopath, is a source of great courage to deal with the most obstinate of the
disease conditions.
I give all the credit of learning and perceiving the Carcinosin drug picture to my Guru, friend, philosopher, Dr Jnan Majumdar (Dr J N Majumdar). Gradually, I also gathered more information from the writings of Foubister, Temleton, O A Julian, Huib-Bon Hoa, Solvey and finally, my own clinically confirmed symptoms.
CANCER - A BRIEF OVERVIEW
Cancer is expressed hieroglyphically as a pair of spiders. These convey the
change in direction of sun’s movement hitherto in the ascendant but now in the
descendant and represent schematically the fluctuations in life. The fourth sign
of Zodiac fails immediately after solstice when the days begin to grow shorter.
It is a creature of water dwelling inside its protective shell. With the spirit
of waters closely identified; quality of intimacy, of inwardness, of
internality, reminds us that the beginnings and prefiguration of rebirth in
seed, egg, embryo or bud are wrapped in shell, womb, bark or sheath, designed to
preserve the power of resurrection enclosed within their protection.
This 4th sign may be identified with Carl Jung’s maternal archetype with all
the qualities which this implies: the large enfolding, sheltering, preserving,
nourishing, protecting and fostering what is small. In Homoeopathic sense-it an
unorganized chaotic cells having above qualities.
The Cancerain personality evolves through the sensitivity of
child’s soul in a maternal environment as well as through the growth of the
imagination in the world of romantic, fantastic and lyrical subjectivity,
memories and dreams. The drug picture of Carcinosin has this sense.
Mystically speaking, those influenced by this sign enjoy strong and hidden
powers potentially favourable to future incarnation, but I can say that people
having a cancerous diathesis have hidden powers.
Case 1:
Lean, thin, emaciated female, aged 19 years, came to my clinic with the a
swelling in the left of the neck. The swelling was painful and accompanied by
evening rise of temperature. On examination, the swelling was found to be
tender, regular in outline with smooth surface (Tender Cervical
Lymphadenopathy).
On interrogation, patient revealed that she had not suffered from any of the
childhood diseases such as measles, chickenpox, whooping cough etc. She had a
F/H of Tuberculosis.
This feature of not having contracted any childhood disease, I have frequently
confirmed in favour of Carcinosin.
Taking into consideration the totality of the case, I prescribed Carcinosin
30/9 doses-TDS for 3 days.
During the subsequent follow-up, patient reported marked improvement with
subsidence of swelling and fever.
Case 2:
A Muslim lady, 75 years old, presented with Fluctuating Hypertension. She
was a very calm, silent lady with a delicate constitution. She also had severe
constipation; she often evacuated at intervals of 8-10 days. Her husband had
died due to Carcinoma of lung. Careful interrogation revealed that she kept all
her emotions under wraps and never allowed it to come to the fore.
Taking into account the fluctuation in her BP as changeability, obstinate
constipation, husband’s H/o of cancer* (*A few cases in my clinical practice
have guided me to consider H/o cancer in the husband for prescribing for his
wife and children and vice-versa; even cancer in children may sometime give a
good clue for prescribing Carcinosin in parents). I gave her carc
she settled completely.
Case 3:
Once I was called to treat upon an elderly man, aged 70 years, suffering
from Chronic Renal Failure with Diabetes Mellitus. On account of his ill-health,
he requested me to pay a home visit. On entering his house, I admired the
absolute orderliness in which the things were placed in his house. Minutest care
had been taken to place the things and hence his Fastidiousness immediately
struck me.
His C/o extreme weakness and lethargy with a very poor appetite. Occasional C/o
cramps in the calf region especially on prolonged sitting. On careful
interrogation; he revealed stressful family life since the death of his wife due
to ill-behaviour of his children.
He had a Family H/o Diabetes Mellitus. He loved taking fruits and chocolates. He
had difficulty in getting to sleep since a long time. He loved listening to
music.
Taking into consideration the totality of the case; I prescribed Carcinosin
30/3 doses, 12 hourly and advised him to regulate his diet with regards to his
illness.
The patient reported marked improvement in his appetite and sleep. Lethargy
reduced, Blood Urea and Blood Sugar levels came down.
Case 4:
A man aged 24 years, consulted me for his travel sickness. He told me that
whenever he travelled, especially in mountainous regions, he developed extreme
giddiness with nausea and vomiting. Persistent queries revealed no other
physical complaint.
He had desire for sweets. He had a strong Family h/o Diabetes Mellitus. He was
very touchy by nature and sensitive to trifles. He was highly egoistic. On
interrogation; he revealed that although he appeared mild from outside; he was
destructive from inside.
Thus, from analogy: attributes very much those of cancer, i.e mild and benign
external appearance with extreme destructiveness inside.
After thorough case analysis, I prescribed Carcinosin 30/1 dose. The
patient reported later that he could travelled to a hill station without any
discomfort whatsoever!
Case 5:
A female, aged 23 years, with numerous brownish moles on face, consulted me
for her c/o obstinate dysmenorrhoea since menarche. She used to experience
severe pain especially in right thigh with nausea on the first day of periods.
The pain was better from warmth and reduce over next few days till the period
was over.
The other complaints were obstinate constipation since childhood with occasional
bleeding per rectum; pain in legs from draught of cold air and tendency to sore
throat on taking sour and cold thigns. Chilly patient; Appetite: Good but can’t
tolerate hunger. Profuse sweating especially on face. Family h/o Diabetes
Mellitus, Cancer and TB. Mentally obstinate, sensitive and highly egositic.
Loves and enjoys nature.
Homoeopathic medicines like Mag-phos, Chamomilla, Calc-carb, Viburnum-opulus
had no desired result. Taking into account her mental obstinacy and the
obstinate nature of her complaints, I gave her Carcinosin 30/1 dose.
Her long standing Dysmenorrhoea and constipation were much relieved so too her
other complaints.
