4th National Homeopathic Conference - Bangalore, March 2001
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 2001 Jan / Feb VOL III NO 1.
Reported by
Dr Rama Hariharan

The 4th National Homoeopathic Conference was held in Bangalore on 3 & 4 March 2001.

OBJECTIVE of conference was to highlight the Homoeopathic approach in the so-called incurable diseases of modern medicine, according to Dr B D Patel, patron, Karnataka Qualified Homeopathic Doctors Association, the organizers of the event.

Inauguration: by Dr S P Koppikar the "Bhishma Pitamaha" of Homeopathy. It was a touching gesture.
Award: The SEVA RATHNA was awarded to Dr C S Sharada, who has helped nurture Homeopathy in Bangalore and outlying rural areas.

Academic Session: Dr K P Mazumdar, veteran teacher from Mumbai, highlighted the usefulness of some Indian medicines in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, through cases. In Cynodon, (complement to China Lyco, Carbo-veg) the drug pathogenesis resembles mucus colitis, amoebiosis, etc while Atista -indica has more affinity for giardiasis; the resemblance of Kurchi (another IBS affinity drug) and Cina for constant pain at the umbilicus. He also attributed the usefulness of Abroma-angustra in dysmenorrhea to its high Magnesium content.

Dr Mirza Anwar Baig, surgeon-turned-Homeopath, outlined some highlights of the new nosode Virioum with which AIDS becomes curable on Homeopathic principles! He said 30-40 yrs ago we used to get Tub/Syphil constitutions frequently. Nowadays we get malignant constitutions-one, cancerous (neoplastic) and the other AIDS (destructive). Clinically he found a link between HIV-1 and various neoplastic conditions! He pointed out that palliative treatment by the modern medicines in diseases suppresses natural form of immunity and modifies it to become susceptible to multiple drug resistant disorders. This new constitution he calls the HIV constitution. He found Carc an exact match to HIV of the first type and many cases responded clinically to it! The second nosode HIV2 corresponded more to the drug resistant diseases of the destructive type and here too he found astonishing results. He talked of Homoimmunization wherein the immunity of immunosuppressed cases was boosted with the new nosodes.

Senior homeopath from Kottayam, Dr R P Patel, summed up that session and reminded the usage of Dysentric-co and Streptococcinum for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. He stressed the importance of never giving a deep miasmatic remedy in an acute phase, but to treat the acute first, just as how Hahnemann himself did and then to treat the chronic phase.

The vivid presentation on handling acute emergencies Homeopathically by Dr C S Sharada left the audience spellbound. She stressed the importance of observation, alertness, Materia Medica knowledge and the ability to treat on particulars and modalities in order to handle such cases instantaneously. A few cases are briefly discussed here.

Case 1
Once she was called into ICU to see if she could do anything for a lady who was sinking with post partum haemorrhage+++ after "C section", BP 60/40. From her emergency kit she gave Adrenalin N 6 1tsp in water every ½ hr. To the surprise of all, by next morning the BP had stabilized as also the hemorrhage!

Case 2
At a marriage hall adjoining her clinic, a 49-yr old lady fell unconscious, with cold sweat all over, tachycardia, BP 220/140. Amyl-nit 6 1 tsp every 5 mins revived her in 15mts! Amyl-nit covers climacteric + BP + syncope well.

Case 3
M-60, children NRIs, retd engineer living with wife and grandchildren. He had a cardiac bypass surgery 2-yr ago. Once he did not pass urine for 7 hrs. Looked uneasy, with fear of death, wanted to call his children and said he was dying. Taking his pulse, and other symptoms such as sudden starting with sighing, hyperventilation and dyspnoea. (Cheyne Stokes resp.) Acon-ferrox was given. Acon-ferrox produced 3-4 liters of urine! The preferred action of Acon-ferrox is a diuretic whilst Acon-nig is an antipyretic.

Case 4
Thin middle-aged woman, HT, with rheumatic pains, and frequent fainting spells. EEG normal. Despite being well protected used to have severe jerks of the body in winter. Sensitive to cold+++. Diagnosis - Epileptic fainting. Once the doctor was called during an episode of jerking and observed the patient moaning "can’t bear the ice on my back" O/E normal back. Suddenly she became stiff at the neck, and with severe jerking fell unconscious. Touching her pulse brought on another jerk. Icy cold feeling with spasms from least touch ruled out Cicuta and favored Strychninum 6, 2 doses and she regained consciousness and jerking stopped. Ascending potencies of the same medicine were given as and when needed in a span of 2 yrs and the Ht and rheumatic pains too disappeared along with epileptic fainting!

Case 5
A case of renal colic in a fat, fair, sweaty person who was holding his abdomen tight - instead of Colocynth she gave him Calc-renalis 30. In 15mts he passed 2 large stones containing oxalic acid! Hint - avoid raw tomatoes and palak in a CALCAREA constitution.

Case 6
A case of rectal prolapse with severe pain since 15 nights. No sleep with itching+++ jumping from the itching Indigo 200 in water - in 3 days the prolapse had regressed and the itching was tolerable!

Dr Matani From Mumbai, in her paper on mental disorders explained the difference between the disposition (will, emotion) and the mind (dreams, memory, illusions, delusions). She stressed the importance of aphorisms 210-222 in the Organon as the guiding principle.

Pune´s Dr Anil Habbu: paper on cervical and lumbar spondylosis had many practical tips. In his experience most people above age 45/50 in a MRI reading of the spine will have vertebral disc protrusion but no suffering. When stress overcomes them then it gives rise to pain esp if today’s fast lifestyle has been the norm. In his practice he has observed that the transverse process of C7 is usually implicated in cervical spondylosis.

Homeopathic remedies work very fast and effectively to cure the referred and distressing pain of nerve compression and associated muscle spasms. He pointed out that though local remedies as indicated help quickly but the indicated constitutional remedy helped reversal of pathology for longer periods. Associated measures: hard bed, exercise, local heat etc. He also observed that osteophyte formation was common in dancers and Flour-acid, Calc-flour were of immense help to stop it.

He gave his own case - after a heavy and long day at the clinic he went to Mumbai by road to fetch his sister and returned to Pune immediately. On the way he was constantly talking to his sister seated at the rear. On reaching, he couldn´t clench his fingers above downwards; numbness with pain: rt ulnar palsy! A few doses of Agaricus 200 and the discomfort vanished!

Dr Amitha Baliga from Fr Muller Homeopathic College, Mangalore gave an educative presentation of Mag-mur in a case of spondylosis. She ably brought out the correspondence in nature of magnesium and the deep suppression of the case. Magnesium being the chief constituent of mitochondria helps in the oxidative process and producing ATP hence the deep acting nature of the remedy. She observed that the Mag-mur anxiety is deeper and repression far greater than Nat-mur, which is expressed in dreams whilst in Nat-mur there is suppressed hostility and a "leave me alone" attitude.

Dr Jyoshna Sivaprasad of Fr Muller´s Homeopathic College, Mangalore presented a paper on Mood Disorders and effective casetaking. A bipolar depression case wherein Lachesis and a unipolar depressive disorder case effectively helped with Nat-mur were neatly presented.

Belgaum´s Dr R D Vijaykumar´s paper on a study of 30 cases of recurrent tonsillitis for 1 year with a follow-up for 6 months revealed that predisposition was important, more prevalent in young boys and reiterated the concept of local affliction as part of whole organism.

Dr B D Patel of Bangalore presented a video case of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in a very old lady. Despite allopathic medicines for DM, Homeopathic medicines helped the lady became a little more interactive and independent than before. This was after suffering for 5 yrs with dementia and Alzheimer´s with no progress from allopathic medicines. Dr Patel´s observations were: In India today Alzheimer´s disease is fast spreading due to stress in family relationships, mental shocks (death of spouse, child etc) disappointments, breakup of joint family systems, business failure, disease, excessive medication. He said in younger ages it could be reversed but in the elderly too, Homoeopathy certainly helps in restricting the retardation. He very correctly pointed out that in such situations care-givers should be trained well.

Dr Ramdas of Bangalore gave a very neat expose on the complications of vaccinations scientifically through a case of cerebral parenchymal atrophy, seizures in a child after BCG, DPT and OPV. The predominant mental state of the child along with the prevalent miasm led him to the right remedy.

Dr Latha Devarajan of Bangalore with her marvellous presentation of acute exacerbation in chronic cases in 4 different situations highlighted the study of Organon and how it helped her move the patient’s vital force to a better level of health when she seemed apparently stuck.

In most conferences one usually picks up one or two new points. Here was a conference where I did not want to miss a single speaker. The IT capital of India lived up to its name and most speakers from Karnataka used the computer very effectively. The food was excellent. Hats off to the organizers and the speakers towards making this a most memorable seminars!
