Letters to the Editor
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 2000 Sept / Oct VOL II NO 5.

Excerpts from a Long Letter
There has been quite some controversy about George Vithoulkas and his criticism of contemporary Homoeopaths. Quite a few pages were devoted to this in the Links recently. Some excerpts from a letter by Dr Lakshminarayan editor of Medicina Futura Homoeopathy, is given herewith.

Some of Dr L's criticism is included here:

  1. In the first issue of European Journal of Classical Homoeopathy, Vithoulkas wrote an article on Sigmund Freud. This was falsified in many respects (to correct from his letter) and revolted my sensibility. I even wrote a registered letter to GV pointing out the distortions in that article and suggesting a correction to be issued in his Journal. No response
  2. In his Acceptance Speech of his "Right Livelihood Award 1996", Vithoulkas claims to have treated MORE THAN 100,000 cases and witnessed 150,000 cases. (An amazing feat, assuming a six day week minus a two-month vacation, teaching, seminaring, books, computer programming, sickness and other social commitments!)
  3. He added "I devoted all my time to reviving Classical Homoeopathy as taught by Dr S Hahnemann, upgrading it to the level of a science and giving it back to the world with the proof that it works!" (What modesty!)
  4. Excerpts from his Magnum opus 'Materia medica Viva' in his Journal on MM of some drugs. The symptoms for Aurum-met, a well-proved polycrest, were, to be charitable, bizarre; something which none from Hahnemann to Neatby -Stoneham would recognize.
  5. So far none of even our well-known Homoeopaths have reacted to such assaults by GV on the entire world of homoeopathy. It required a savage verbal abuse by GV specifically aimed at some Homoeopaths to bring about a semi-retaliation.
I want to put a few questions to a select few inheritors of our great heritage.
  1. To Roger Morrison: Did you find one assertion of Hahnemann anywhere not supported by scientific explanation? Did you ever feel that one required a GV to upgrade Homoeopathy to the level of a science and giving it back to the world with the proof that it works? Nobody else, Hering, Kent, Hayes, Tyler, Farringtons et al could establish that homoeopathy works! - claims GV. Today you have joined your homoeopathic comrades in protesting against GV's tirade. Please re-read your country's JAIH and Homoeopathic recorder old issues It will open up your eyes to what false gods you have been worshipping.
  2. To those who wrote to Links: "let me assure you that GV is a dedicated homoeopath with a positive side. But let us understand his overall worth in promoting the scientific development of homeopathy as a therapeutic system whose potentialities require to be continuously explored and exploited. The image of homoeopathy is still a very poor also-ran and trailing even acupuncture. The type of seminars and lectures you are now so fond of fostering only imitates the money-rich allopaths who bring out a new scientific discovery every second only to be just ephemera or the light emitted by the firefly.

Editor adds: Frailties of the Human Mind: In our childhood we were told the story of the mother frog that puffed herself till she burst to demonstrate that no one can be bigger than her.

All these fables for children have a hidden lesson but these are available only to the sensitive. Over al, I do not know what lasting impact these fables have had. Probably none, otherwise why this craving continues for Big, Bigger and the Best. We all know ourselves and our own contributions and so do others. We cannot certainly fool all the people all the time. But going by track records we can fool some people all the time. And that seems to be enough. When one poses as big, all want to throw arrows to puncture and deflate. So the persons who only wants to work, remain behind the scenes. Homoeopathy is a holistic science and it is supposed to cleanse us of our frailties and ego. But does it? My mother, late Dr Sarla Sonawala, used to maintain that Homoeopaths as a rule are a most miasmatic lot!.

I am greatly indebted to NJH. It has helped me revive my interest in Homoeopathy. I can still remember the way my friend had tried to convince me to join ICR after we had finished BHMS. But due to adverse circumstances I couldn't join it. But God's ways are mysterious indeed and after coming to Kakinada, I decided to practise homoeopathy after my son's allergic bronchitis became well with Homoeopathy. I have got a fairly good response from my patients. I would like to become more adept in my treatment and practical Homoeopathy. For this each NJH issue helps me in subtle ways.

Kudos for your exceptionally good work in the Homoeopathic field.

Obituary
Shock for the Homoeopathic world- the sad and untimely demise of our beloved and great Homoeopath, Dr.M.L.Agrawal, on 20th November 2000. We have lost a great exponent of Homoeopathy. His loss shall ever be felt, as the void created by his demise cannot be easily filled.

Dr Agrawal trained a number of disciples, provided priceless relief to his patients all over the world and rendered unparalleled services for propagation of Homoeopathy and to Homoeopathic fraternity.

Dr Agrawal was so quick to assess a patient's complaint that his diagnosis and the medicine were unmistakably a perfect blend. "Minimum medicine and sure shot relief' was his prime objective while treating his patients. This success was due to his ability to penetrate the patient's thought process responsible for the disease. The hidden signals never escaped his observation.

His in-depth knowledge of Homoeopathy so much benefited us that we appear to have orphans all of a sudden.
His organizing capacity was the force behind his majestic personality, which enabled him to hold prestigious position in many organizations. Besides, he did write many valuable books on Homoeopathic topics, especially on "Symptoms of the the Mind" which have helped me personally and will continue to guide all of us.

May God bless the departed soul and give courage to grief stricken family member to bear their irreparable loss.
Dr. B. S. Johri. Delhi
