CASES MATERIA MEDICA GENERAL ARTICLES ABSTRACT MISCELLANEOUS Q & A

An Empirical Study- on Lymphadenopathy
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 2000 May / Jun VOL II NO 3.
Dr Padmaja Pai-Shenoy
'Tub-b / Ars-iod

I have treated several children with Cervical Lymphadenopathy, who were advised Anti-Koch's Treatment (AKT) on the following premises:

  1. Cervical lymphadenopathy
  2. Lymphocytosis.
  3. Elevated ESR levels.
  4. MT Positive - Induration 9 mm - 11mm
AKT is given for at least 6-9 months. Moreover some of these are hepatotoxic. I initially referred my patients to an eminent paediatrician in my area for a second opinion; he gave us (the mother of the child and myself) a month's reprieve. He said that, should the child gained one kg in weight within a month while on homoeopathy, the child need not undergo AKT. His premise obviously was that if there was a weight gain, the child was not being suffering from TB in the first place. Or Child was responding! This shows monitoring of weight in a case (or suspected) of Tuberculosis.

Generally hesitant to take any case, whose outcome could not be confidently predicted, I felt bolded by the one-month deadline. The patients were put on a high protein diet (in a Koch's patient, such a diet will not lead to weight gain) and homoeopathic medicines. Within a month, each of the children gained that magical one Kg in weight and AKT was averted and within three months from the onset of homoeopathic treatment, all blood parameters returned to normal. Only two reports were done (one prior to the onset of the medication and the other three months after the treatment) as the patients were all very young. Having averted AKT in these children, I must say that the results were gratifying.

Signs And Symptoms In All Cases: Cervical lymphadenopathy, Poor appetite, loss of weight, repeated cold and coughs, hyperactive, failure to thrive, thermally hot.

Criteria For Selecting Ars-Iod
All the patients had one peculiar common trait: The little ones were fastidious! This is an unfailing feature in all Arsenicums. They are prime and proper and cannot bear a tiny spill of food on their clothes - will want it immediately cleaned.
Iodum- Hot patient, emaciated, glands, failure to thrive.

The Masters refer to Ars-iod as a remedy par excellence in TB. Ars-iod 30 TDS for 2-3 months was prescribed until cervical glands were not palpable anymore, followed by Tuberculinum 1M-2 doses per month for three months. All these children are doing fine even today.

Kindly note that none of the cases mentioned hereinabove were cases of simple lymphadenopathy where the blood parameters are normal. Such cases are extremely common in Mumbai and are no cause for alarm. Often a local scalp condition like lice or tinea of the scalp or boils can cause cervical lymphadenopathy. These obviously respond completely to appropriate homoeopathic remedies.
