VI th Sarla Sonawala Seminar 2000
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 2000 Jan / Feb VOL II NO 1.
Dr Neelofer Shaikh

The trend setting VIth SSMS was held on 30th January 2000 at Choksey Auditorium, Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. Here is a brief report.

In typical NJH style, without any ado, just a brief inauguration of lighting the lamp at Dr Sarla Sonawala's potrait, the seminar was on. The morning session saw Dr K N Kasad, in spite of his illness, presenting a treatise on classification and clinico-patho-physio & mental co-relation of Acids.

He gave a brief introduction of Mendelef Modern Periodic Table. Total number of acids are 33 out of which 19 organic and 13 inorganic. There are some acids, which are synthesized in laboratories like Na-fluoricum. Then he gave PQRS symptoms of acids like Ph-acid - Non debilitating diarrhoea (only such drug in MM)

Fl-acid/Kali-iod - can do heavy exertion without getting fatigue.
Condurango - gastric/pyloric cancer
Fuligo- Ca tongue
Kreosote, Cadmium- coffee ground vomiting in terminal stages of Ca.
Sulph-acid - Injuries with extravasation of blood.
Carbolic-acid - Burn
Sycolactic-acid - muscle paresis, paralysis
Picric-acid - spinal cord/CNS
H.A. Hyd-a - Endocrine system.
Hydrocy-a / Carbolic-acid - Heart

He demonstrate the acids by cases:
Case 1: A 38-year-old lady with fissure. Chilly, Cr-pica, with H/o black menses, had neglected feeling with abusing, cursing nature, got treated with Nitric-acid after Mag-carb failed.

Second case was of a housewife with multiple phobias, better with Arg-nit. Third case of a hurried lady who had glycosuria during pregnancy, was better with Lactic-acid. Then there was a case of traumatic ulcer that healed beautifully with Sulphuric-acid. (All cases given in Dr K N K's paper)

2nd Session: Dr Vishpala Parthasarathy demonstrated with breathtaking visual aids, her in-depth understanding of Phos-acid. She explained beautifully how a Phos-acid is produced because of prolonged ongoing grief. They suffer so much in life that they become like stone. They have no tears left in the eyes to cry.

Some features are as follows:

  1. Languor
  2. Dead eye with expressionless face
  3. Disproportionately tall
  4. Crushed, defeated, hopeless, destroyed
  5. Extremely drowsy
  6. Worse from music.
Later on she narrated cases of Ph-acid. (See details in the article on Ph-acid)

Post Lunch Session: Dr Kasim Chimthanawala's talk. He spoke about the role of Fluoric-acid and Muriatic-acid in hospital practice. He narrated uses of these acids in acute and chronic stages of fever. (Paper included)

Fluoric-Acid: Acute Fever

  1. Slow Zymotic, typhoid type
  2. Acidity, burning heat
  3. < tea, coffee, standing, > open air
Chronic stage
  1. Can exert much in extremes of temperature (opp Muriatic-acid)
  2. Indifferent to his loved ones (Sep)
  3. Sexual eroticism
  4. Burning hot without fever.
  5. Responsibility, poor realization
  6. Varicose veins.
Muriatic-acid: Acute Stage
  1. Last stage, continuous, low form of typhoid, peripheral, septic, diathesis, 3rd stage, prostration when recovering jaw hangs down. Refuses to talk, irritated.
  2. Involuntary passage of stool with urine.
  3. Extremely sensitive piles through overall not so sensitive.
Chronic Stage
  1. Bleeding, dark, putrid
  2. Urogenital area sensitive
  3. Vertigo Rt. Side
  4. Cannot see or think about meat (NA)
  5. Piles/fissures - bleeding.
Then he narrated cases like Rectal prolapse treated with Muriatic-acid; prolapse of piles with worms - Muriatic-acid only.

4th SPEAKER of the day was Dr N L Tiwari who spoke on Picric-acid.

  1. Yellowness
  2. Great weakness complaining to lie down fatigue of mental and down body.
  3. It is formed by action of Nit-acid to Carbolic-acid.
  4. Affects spinal cord /brain
The he differentiated PQRS symptoms of Picric-acid with other remedies.

Picric- Acid
Heaviness/softening - Oxalic-acid -Numbness of spinal cord
Erection but less - Phos
Irritability with lascivious - increased sexual desire
No will at all - Sil. Will- Fl-ac

Then he explained Picric-acid with some cases, given in his paper.

Dr C H ASRANI talked on Art of clinical examination. He said doctors should be thorough with their medicinal knowledge and always should remain in touch with books. He coined a term "Clinical Thinking" and explained in depth how a physician should start the thought process, the minute he faces a patient so as NOT to miss any emergency and pick up valuable clues about both the patient and illness. How one point should lead to another was shown with examples. (Detailed Write Up To Appear In Next Issue)

Dr NINA DOSHI discussed Nitric-acid with cases and explored the relationship of Nitric-a with different drugs.

Similarities of drug with Nitric-a.
Nitric-a = Arnica = easily frightened
= gross stubborn
Calc-c = offended easily
Kali-c = anxiety, weeping

Dr Rama Hariharan wonderfully acted out the personalities of various acids. She acted out Fl-acid, Acid-gallicum. This type of enactment of drugs was a unique presentation of SSMS.

The seminar was packed with information, well timed and beautifully managed. The highlight was of course Dr Rama Hariharan bringing her talents as an actress.
The report has been given only very briefly as all papers of the seminar are given in detail in this issue itself, except Dr Rama Hariharan, who acted it out and that cannot be put into the written word.

Dr Vishpala Parthasarathy concluded the seminar saying this seminar has surpassed even our (*) expectations. The audience was very satisfied with the matter and manner of presentation. Many of the delegates had attended all the past SSMS.

The best tribute was when one NJH Life member told us that she opted out of a trip to Singapore to attend the seminar while another said that she scheduled her knee replacement after the date of SSMS!

Such compliments, I am sure speaks volumes about standard of both NJH seminars and issues. All delegates left with complete satisfaction on the learning produced in the seminar.
