July 98 Seminar at Tiruchi Taluka
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1998 Sep / Oct VOL VII NO 5.
Reported by
Dr V Narasimman

'Homoeopathy - the need of the hour' was the theme of the two-day Southern Scientific Seminar organized by the Tiruchi Taluka Homoeo Doctors Association on 25th and 26th July 1998, and held in St Joseph's college, Tiruchi, a pioneer educational institution.. Delegates from all over south attended.

Auspiciously inaugurated by the traditional "Mangala Isai' in Nadaswaram. Fr George of 'Kalai Kaviri' an art school in Tiruchirapalli inaugurated the seminar and urged Homoeopaths to work like missionaries.

Scientific Session- Day 1
Dr R Sandhana Pandian, from Homoeopathy postgraduate board- Kerala was the moderator. He also gave a fine discourse on some rare Indian drugs and their clinical uses in routine day-to-day practice-Cassia-sophera,Cynadon- dactylon Caeselpenia-bunducella, Amoora-Rohutika. Well known drugs like Syszygium-jambolanum, Justicia-adhatoda, Terminala-arjuna were explained in a lucid way. Proving Indian drugs on Homoeopathic principles is the need of the hour.

Dr Ramiah, President IHO's paper on 'Homoeopathy - the need of the hour' was read by Dr Beemsen from Hyderabad.

Homoeopathy in Pediatrics was the theme of Dr Ram Subramanian, MD [Paed] D.Ch.
He had 2 sessions. First was devoted to his conversion to Homoeopathy and the second to the approach to Paediatric cases. Like late Dr Sankaran, Dr Ram Subramanian too had an opportunity to experience the efficacy of the dynamised doses. In 1993 he had a low-grade fever with chills. This was the moment of conversion: Dr (Mrs) Pathak administered Cocculus-indicus with the assurance that he would be fit to attend duties the next day. Her prediction became true; the conversion became firm; the conviction became clear. A Hom hospital for Paediatrics got rooted in Thane, to proclaim to the whole world the truth of 'Similia Similibus Curanter.' Dr Ram studied Homoeopathy in the midst of his busy practice. Now he only treats children with sweet pills.

He then discussed five cases treated in his hospital- Bronchiolitis, Atopic eczema,, Infectious mononucleosis, Intussusceptions, acute nephritis, hypertension and CCF were discussed in detail. Every case is first diagnosed on the allopathic model, then symptoms are collected to find the similimum. Switching over to Homoeopathy has certainly had an impact wherein the total number of in- patients has declined. Yet Dr Ram gets mental peace and happiness. Dr Ram Subramanium is currently undergoing M F Hom [Lon] Postgraduate course in Hom.

He explained the cost-effectiveness of Homoeopathy through statistical data. Of the five cases taken for discussion, the case of 'Intussusceptions' cured by Plumbum-met is a Homoeopathic marvel.

Dr Radha Krishnamurthy, Bsc, BL, VP IHO and former advisor to the Govt. of AP, presented an illuminating lecture on 'Sensation is better than instrument.' He cited many cases in his practice where peculiar sensations led to the similimum. The sensations represent the personality of the individual and no scanner or X-ray unit can detect them. A book entitled 'Homoeopathy for all' was released.
Last session was 'Question hour' and written questions were answered.

Scientific Session- Day 2
The day of the Patels!
Dr R P Patel used almost the entire second day for his lecture on 'chronic miasms'. supported by OHP. He emphasized the need for thorough reading of the 'Organon' He keeps one copy on his table and another on his bedside! Prescriptions should be based on totality of symptoms and constitutional miasmatic symptoms.

Dr B D Patel took off where Dr R P Patel left. His lecture on cancer had continuity with the subject of his predecessor.
He began thus: "It is said...if you were to read the Hom MM, it would start with confusion and end in vertigo.'
In a nutshell, this is the beginner's handicap and predicament: The case baffles him. Symptoms confuse him. Till finally, he himself becomes a patient!
He exhorted Homoeopaths to follow classical Hom based on sound principles & desist from embracing polypharmacy.

Then he elaborated the homoeopathic concepts and management relating to cancer. He said that there was also change in the perspective of allopaths to cancer. Now they have realized that the malignancy of a particular tissue reveals the malignancy of the entire constitution. The octopus and not the crab, more aptly represents cancer. It is a point worth pondering over. Certain features common in most Ca-patients:

  1. Meticulous nature
  2. Sense of musical rhythm
  3. Desire for travel
  4. Sense of compassion to the suffering
  5. Unhappy childhood
WE have 'patient specific drugs" in Homoeopathy- ie individualization which is a plus point in our system of healing. But, unfortunately, the patients come to Homoeopathy as a last resort, when their vital force is at a low. So most often the Homoeopath has to deal with terminal cases. Our remedies can act only as palliatives at this stage. Nosodes and organopathic drugs are most helpful in tackling this dreadful disease, and the treatment is not as difficult as it seems: These words of Dr B D Patel would certainly embolden the young practitioner to take on cases of cancer with courage.

Dr B Kadiri Koya spoke on his concept of 'Quadric potency'. Quadric potency is akin to 50-ML potency. For preparing higher attenuation's in 50 ML, 3C potency is used as the base. But 3C potencies are seldom available Dr Koya has evolved a system of preparing remedies in the quadric potency. Higher attenuation in the quadric scale can be prepared with any potency such as 30, 200 etc which are easily available. As this work of Dr Koya forms part of his thesis to be submitted to the University for Evaluation, we will not dilate upon the methodology used.

The concluding part of the seminar was devoted to formal felicitations of all the luminaries by Dr S A G Rabi, president Federation of Homoeopathic doctors, Tamil Nadu.
