In the early years of my practice whenever I would study a remedy and come across peculiar, strange and rare symptoms, I used to wonder whether I would ever find any patient with such symptoms. During the course of my long practice, patients having peculiar, strange and rare symptoms did come for treatment, after they had exhausted all other channels. A few cases are enumerated here where the wonder drug in all the cases was the same.
Case 1 :
An eighty yr old lady was under my treatment for minor ailments. She was pious, God fearing, affectionate and devoted to her family. Then, perhaps, due to some psychological changes she started muttering soliloquies. Her family members thought it to be a sign of senility, but gradually her condition deteriorated. It caused concern and consternation to the family. She could not sleep. Her disjointed mutterings and unceasing conversation with the 'self' would not let others have any kind of respite at night. The situation became all the more alarming when she started hurling curses at her family. Her constant refrain being 'your father is lying hungry in his room. You are callous, you do not pay any attention.' The father, her husband, was however, long dead. Gradually such mutterings were not only during night but also during the day. Her words were singularly incomprehensible and conversation incoherent. She would mention of her relatives who were long dead. Out of utter desperation, I was approached to take up the case. I assured them that all would be well. After following the case, I sent the medicine in 30 potency and after a fortnight when slight relapse was observed, gave 3 doses in 200 potency to be administered 3 hourly. To the satisfaction of one and all the medicine had the desired effect. Her delirium disappeared. Her end, which came 3 years later, was peaceful.
Case 2 :
My nephew who is working in a bank at Sirhind, Punjab, came to my clinic one day with his boss. The gentleman had a steel tumbler in his hand which he placed on the side of the steps leading to the clinic. After customary introduction, the gentleman requested me to examine the urine sample of his 80 yrs old father. It was deep red in color. It was frank blood. I was told that all kinds of treatment had proved useless. The patient, I came to know was religious. God fearing, hardworking, conscientious, compassionate and a pious soul. In the absence of other symptoms I prescribed Hamamelis-virginica. There was slight improvement. There upon I gave him Chimaphila which had a better effect. I thought it to be a case of prostrate enlargement. In the absence of clear symptoms, I could hardly repertorise the case and had to rely on intuition. As we all know, Erigeron-canadense is the specific medicine in such cases, so this drug in mother tincture form and 3 potency was given. Subsequently Chininium-sulph in 30 and 200 potency was prescribed which brought about good improvement and the symptoms disappeared. Various urine tests at regular intervals showed complete absence of RBC. Therefore said malady may be termed the case history. The patient remained under treatment for 6 months. Chininium-sulph was given at longer intervals.
One day the manager once again came to my clinic and this time he narrated peculiar ailment. His father who drew his pension from U K govt had to sign his pension papers every month. This time when pension papers were shown he refused to sign, saying he is dead. He is no more in this world. The question of signing the papers does not arise. Son was dismayed and told his father that when he was talking and was present in flesh and blood, how could he be dead? But the old man remained adamant, when pressed further started cursing and abusing. The manager then sent one of his assistants to get the papers signed, thinking perhaps his father was in a playful mood and cracking a practical joke with his family. He was also meted out the same treatment. He shouted at the assistant "Your boss is stupid. He does not know Mr..... Is no more in the world. So signing of the papers is out of question." The medicine in 30 potency was prescribed and the patient was back to the world of reality in 3 days. After about 20 days when withdrawal symptoms surfaced 200 potency was given. For four yrs, the symptoms never surfaced and the end came peacefully owing to old age.
