Is Homoeopathy a "toothless" science of Therapeutics? I am sure that the unprejudiced readers of this journal, and especially this issue, will have no difficulty in coming to the conclusion that even in complaints pertaining to the teeth, gums, etc. Homoeopathy has a definite answer, an answer which even the Modern School cannot hold a candle to. In this regard I would like to discuss a case of Pyorrhoea alveolaris which I treated with remarkable results over a decade ago.
I was on my usual visit to the vegetable vendor, Vasant, from whom I purchased my needs every day. His wife asked me to talk to her husband and find out what is wrong with him, he is not taking any food in the last few days. Vasant was standing there in a corner and when I asked him what is wrong, he said that all his teeth are loose and aching; he cannot chew his food, and he was going to the dentist that evening to get all his teeth extracted. He was spitting every few minutes, and his mouth odour was so offensive that I could not stand even two feet away from him. I asked him as to why he should pull out all his teeth at his young age of 40, and convinced him to take Homoeopathy, and promised that his teeth will be saved. His salivation as well as mouth odour led me to prescribe Mercurius-sol 1M every four hours. Meantime, I gathered from a Dentist that Amosan Power [in water] if gargled, would cleanse his mouth. Unless the mouth was clean Homoepathic medicine alone may take longer time to heal.
Vasant himself found Amosan so good that he gargled several times a day. He told me next day that after taking each dose of Merc-sol 1M he felt relief in salivation for 3 hours or so. Guided by this response, I advised him to adjust the frequency of dosage every 3 hours if necessary. Over the next few days he was reporting gradual improvement, when I gave him Merc-sol 10M two or three times a day as may be necessary. This potency helped him much better and he said that he could even bite the groundnuts with his Lt grinders. In the next few days his salivation, mouth odour as well as ability to chew improved and his complaint was cured within a fortnight. I learnt from this case that if needed even a high potency can, and indeed, should be repeated frequently, till a stable cure is established.
Another complaint which patients frequently suffer from, at times for yrs, is the injury to the nerves due to extraction of molars. [One has to see how hard a job it is for the dentist to do this]. I had 2 patients who suffered this way, and the only relief they could obtain was by inspiring cool air to the part. This went on for years, till they gave Homoeopathy a chance. Hypericum 30,200 and 1M in ascending potencies completely stopped this pain in about a month's time.
