CASES MATERIA MEDICA GENERAL ARTICLES ABSTRACT MISCELLANEOUS Q & A

Learning Magnesium from the patient
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1997 Mar / Apr VOL VI NO 2.
Dr Kishore Mehta

My understanding of Magnesium was learned from different sources.
1. Kent's Materia Medica
2. Symposium volume of ICR CF - Section
3. Hahnemann's Materia Medica Pura
I created an image of the magnesium group, which was applied to my cases. Whatever was cured was added to that image, and thus the Magnesium picture constantly grew.
Experience has taught me that the whole image of any drug may not be fully reflected in one case. Some cases may show an acute phase of Magnesium, while another may show predominant mental, physical or pathological symptoms. Thus it is essential for the physician to perceive the drug inspite of limited expressions in the case.

My Image Of Magnesium
A strong willed person, highly sentimental, very like the Natrums with high ambition and desire for pleasure, position and power. They crave love and high expectations of reciprocation. When deprived of this Magnesium feels dissatisfied, deprived and dejected to the extent of feeling neglect.
1] Thus primarily Magnesium feels ORPHANED and NEGLECTED [abandoned and forsaken in repertorial language]
2] The other important disposition is FIXITY. He has fixed ideas and resists change. Fixity of ideas, values, attitudes and feelings make him immobile which appears to others as obstinacy and sluggishness [like Calcarea]. In continuous adverse environment, this leads to frustration which affects his interpersonal relationship. Thus these fixed ideas make or break a relationship.
3] INCONSISTENCY in relationship becomes another characteristic feature of Magnesium. 4] However Magnesium is not as sharp and expressive of his emotions as Natrum. His sorrow and cry remains so much contained within him that he can deceive the observer.
5] The accumulation of these suppressed emotions reflects in the functioning of his system. By the time, the expressions come up on the surface, much damage has already taken place. This subconscious channelization of suppressed emotions is called REPRESSION. This becomes evident through somatisation or dreams. The man may be apparently a happy-go-lucky man, jovial, easily mixing, confident OR he may be non-communicative, alone, a silent sufferer carrying vexation, dissatisfaction, anxiety, fear and a orphaned feeling, depending on its counterpart ie the negative radical [Chloride/Bromide/Iodide]
11] Magnesium covers a range of pathology from inflammation to degeneration to new growths OR inflammation to suppuration to ulceration. Discharges also cover the entire range: watery/bland/acrid/thick/white/yellowish greenish/offensive and sour.
12] The non-communicative is expressed at physical level in form of spasms, cramps, convulsions, congestion and at times as neuralgic pains. All pains are sharp, colicky, intermittent and > by hard pressure and warm application.
13] Magnesium also covers all the four classes of hypersensitive states ranging from Antigen-Antibody reaction to autoimmune disorders.
14] The tissues affected by Magnesium are vital organs like heart, brain, reproductive organs, joints and to a lesser degree, skin and mucous membrane.
Examples of Magnesium presentation
Child appears fair, fat, flabby wit sour perspiration, pica and suffers from feelings of neglect even in a joint family or in an orphanage. This feeling is strong which may be expressed in dreams or at the physical level as epilepsy, asthma, chronic diarrhoea etc. So too for a woman who, as a result of non-communication or repression develops hysterical state, convulsions, dysmenorrhoea, abortions with indelible discharges of menses and leucorrhoea.
An Adult man with such a disposition becomes a victim of musculoskeletal disorders, cardiac complications and convulsions etc.
This concept has been evolved from various cases. Two illustrative cases are given [See the cases section p 96]. REPRESSION is the nucleus in one case while FEELING OF NEGLECT is the nucleus in the other.
(See the Case section P-996)
