IIHP Seminar April 1997, Mumbai
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1997 Mar / Apr VOL VI NO 2.

On 5th and 6th of April, IIHP celebrated Hahnemann's day by organizing a Symposium on 'Scope of a Homoeopath'. The recent Consumer Protection Act prompted the choice of this controversial topic. The aim was to enlighten everyone that Homoeopathy is not just a cough-cold-eczema-arthritis science, but we can ably deal with emergencies as well. Dr Vijaykar first gave an understanding of his theory followed by cases.

The scope of Homoeopathy can be enhanced by
I. Understanding the basis of prescription in serious diseases either acute or chronic.
II. Understanding the meaning of cure
III. Capitalizing on your mistakes.
Understanding the basis of prescription in serious diseases either acute or chronic.

1. In Chronic Diseases
a] Indolent b] Dynamic
[slow progressing] [Fast progressing]
* Hemiplegia,
paraplegia, quadriplegia.
* Tuberculosis
* Psoriasis * Fast growing cancers chr Hypertension
* Chr Diabetes
  * Acute epilepsy
* Rheumatoid arthritis * Acute myocardial infarction
* Mitral valve prolapse
or stenosis

* Hypo/hyperthyroidism * Acute Thyroiditis
* Collagen disorder * Acute leukemias
* IHD

a] Chronic Indolent Diseases : As the name suggests, are the ones which progress slowly, exhibit very little dynamism and hence exhibit few changes in symptoms or nature of a person. The disease impresses itself upon the genetic code, thereby weakening it and hence the correction should be made by strengthening it. These diseases therefore, require a genetic constitutional similimum.
b] Chronic Dynamic Diseases : Come on suddenly. This sudden impact can change the genetic code to exactly the opposite pole. This means during the illness, a fearful lady may become brave and courageous; someone mild may become irritable and angry; an extrovert can become an introvert. The mental and physical constitution will change and this will indicate a drug which is in relation to the original constitutional. Complementarities or relations sometimes have an exactly opposite picture of the original.

Case 1: Quadriplegia
A 30 yr old lady in hospital with total quadriplegia where only movement of neck and above was possible, since 9 months.
MRI showed collapse of C2, C3, C4 with subluxation of discs and a kink in cord at C3, C4. P/H of multiple sclerosis with limp. Full recovery in 1987. History given by the brother. Patient was very hardworking, sincere, selfless worker for her family ie brother, 25 yrs old, sister and schizophrenic mother. No one cared for her, but she worked relentlessly, not out of any fear but who will work if I don't? After all it is my family. Cries on thinking of her family life. Oct '95 attack of pharyngitis. Treatment taken. Then developed pain in lumbar region. Went on working despite continuous pain which spread to cervical spine. Tingling numbness of upper extremities prevent her from even lifting a salt and pepper bottle. Suddenly one day, she could not get up from the toilet. She had to be assisted out. On investigation, found to have tubercular prevertebral abscess. Operated at a major hospital on 25th and 31st Dec but no improvement. Patiently lay down in bed for 9 mths. Regularly doing her namaz, thanking God, that even though she was crippled, her expenses were met with, by her company Air India. She was sure that God would help her to recover.

Discussion : Though a strong DUTY is uppermost in the evolution of the remedy, it should even cover the physical aspect, only then would the TOTALITY be complete. Aversion to AC or fan. Hated the sun which caused her menses and weakness. Thirst good. Desired extra salt. Hated cloudy weather. She only tolerated visitors but actually was an introvert with no friends. She cried that this would not have happened if her sister had helped her. Physically, she was fat and robust with prominent arms and chest - almost like a soldier in armour.

Rubrics Chosen : Mentals
Misanthropy
Conscientious
Indifference, apathy to society, to relations, to pleasure
Industrious - mania for work.
Forsaken feeling
Passionate
Perseverance [fought multiple sclerosis and now quadriplegia]
Courageous

Generals
Chilly yet aggravated by sun.
Music aggravated
Cloudy weather aggravated
Constitutional effect of sun
Thirsty with desire for salt in excess
The core of the mind could be explained by the strong independent, positive, courageous, fighting qualities comparable to that of a strong soldier, performing his duty to his nation [home here] and ready to sacrifice his all.
In this case, all Homoeopaths should arrive at the same similimum, even from different view points; when some consider only basic characteristics; some through mental picture of delusions and illusions which form the core.

A] Delusions of Nat-carb
- del soldier
- del soldier she sees
- del people marching
- sees soldiers marching silently
One sees many soldiers around if one himself is a soldier

B] Intuitive or Fast prescribing Homoeopaths who go on looks alone [dangerous for beginners] would explain that, she had the physical constitution of Cal-carb, with mentals; likes-dislikes of Natrum. Keeping in mind thermal modalities one could give synthetic prescription of Nat-carb
