Treatment of skin disease in rabbits with Homoeopathic Medicine: Sulphur
Case Report
Introduction: Skin diseases like scabies are more prevalent in rabbits particularly in the rabbit warren. Sulphur 30 is a known Homoeopathic medicine for skin infection in human beings. In the present study this medicine has been tried for the first time in rabbits.
Materials and methods: 10 rabbits of 'Chinchillar' breed age about 16 to 20 months showing symptoms of alopecia, dermatitis with itching in muzzel parts, lower hind limbs, in testicular region, behind ears and towards extremities; with loss of weight and decreased food intake were chosen.
Infected rabbits were divided into two groups of five each Rabbits of group-1 were treated with Benzyl benzoate emulsion and injection of Ivermectin @ 200uh/kg/s/c route.
For Group II one drop of Homoeopathic medicine Sulphur 30 was given orally, three times a day for 5 days.
Results: After 5 days it was found that rabbits of group I were showing signs of dermatitis with little improvement in feed intake.
In group II rabbits treated with Homoeopathic medicine showed marked improvement the very next day. It was seen that there was less irritation of affected parts and blood supply of affected part improved. After 5 days the skin healed, feed intake and health improved.
Discussion: Result of presents study with regard to prevalence of skin diseases in rabbits showed that effect of Homoeopathic medicine was quicker. During this course of treatment, it was found that it was easy to administer Homoeopathic medicine and it was painless and harmless to the animal in all aspects.
Local emulsion Benzyl benzoate was quite irritative for animals. As far as cost effectiveness of both treatments it was seen that Homoeopathic treatment was about 20 times cheaper than allopathic treatment.
Conclusion: It conclusively proves that Homoeopathy definitely works.
Caution: As there are no specifics in Homoeopathy, Sulphur 30 cannot claim to cure all cases of such dermatitis. But it is beneficial for quite a few cases. Here inspite of no Individualisation practiced, yet some positive result s were obtained.
