A 12 year old boy was diagnosed as having a polyp in his right ear an ENT specialist. As he did not want to undergo surgery for its removal his case was referred to me for Homoeopathic treatment.
The patient gave a history of pus with bloody discharge from the right ear. the pus was thick yellow in colour and offensive, and it was aggravated by turning the head to the affected side.
The patient had dysentery when he was five years old and he also had a recurrent tendency for catching cold which was aggravated in every winter season and by cold things in general. It was ameliorated by warm drinks and warmth in general. The patients mother told me a very peculiar symptom that the patients upper part of the body was always very hot and the lower half of the body was cold. There was no other significant family history in this case.
He had good appetite and he drank 6 - 10 glasses of water per day. There was no trouble in urination or defection. The patient created sweets +3, sour +3, mutton +3, spicy food and had disgust for milk. The patient perspired profusely on palms +3 and soles +2 which was offensive. The patients sleep was refreshing but had frightful dreams of ghosts and of falling from heights +3 > He as extremely chilly. On the mental front the was obstinate +3 and was aggravated by contradiction. Temper tantrums +3 were marked. He was an anxious personality especially when appearing for examinations. Shy +2 and introverted by nature. Memory was excellent and he always stood in the merit list of his school.
On physical examination he was found to be thin and lean with moist palms and in the right ear a reddish colour polyp was discharged yellowish pus mixed with blood. That his constitutional remedy was Silicea emerged from the Kentian Non-repertorial totality viz anxiety, temper tantrums, obstinate, aggravation from contradiction, shy, frightful dreams, craving for sweets with aversion to milk, perspiration on palms and soles, offensive discharges, chilly patient, right ear affection with polypoidal growth.
Treatment:
On 7-2-1996, Silicea 1 M was prescribed - 3 times a day for a period of 15 days. (Why so m,any doses of high potency ? Editor ).
Follow - up:
By 28-2-96 the pus in the right ear was dramatically reduced by 90 percent. On examination of the right ear no polyp was seen; only a raw surface reddish in colour was observed. Hence placebo was given for 15 days.
Again on 13-2-96 it was noticed that there was no discharge of pus and on examination the right ear was completely normal. Placebo for another 15 days.
On 3-4-96 there were no complaints whatsoever and the patients mother also told that the peculiar sensation of heat in the upper part of the body and coldness in the lower part of the body has totally disappeared.
The patient was advised to stop medicine and when the patient was last seen on 8-5-96 there was no relapse.
It was interesting to note that the peculiar symptom of heat in the upper part of the body and coldness in the lower part of the body was not covered in any repertory nor in any Homoeopathic materia medica books and this symptom observed in the patient disappeared with Silicea. Hence it may be worth noting as a clinical symptom and I appeal to my Homoeopathic friends to verify the same in their practice.
