The National Homoeopathic conference (Dr Kents Memorial Lectures) was held under the aegis of The South Delhi Homoeopathic Association on 7th and 8th Sept. 1996 at PHD Auditorium, New Delhi. Hon Shri Karan Singh MP inaugurated and Shri Sahed Singh Verma CM, Delhi was the chief gust. Books on Clinical Ophthalmology by Dr Kamal Kansal and Is "Doctrine of Miasma - a myth" by Dr Kasim Chimthanawala were released by the dignitaries respectively.
In the 1st scientific session on"Importance of POtency in Homoeopathy" Dr Parimal Banerjee of Calcutta emphasised the point that CM potencies if properly applied are still the best but Dr Rastogi advocated the use of LM potencies and stressed their advantages particular of NO aggravation and rapid effect. Dr Kadri Koya of Madras presented his works on Quadric potencies, prepared from 6c, 30c, 200c, onwards in 50,000 dilutions. He claimed better result from it and requested the fraternity to apply them. Dr Suchendra Sachdeva also spoke on the importance of Centesimal potencies. The Chairman, Dr Kasim said that a similimum includes not only the indicated remedy but the exact potency and the dose. He listed the parameters for selecting the potency viz the sensibility of the economy, presenting miasmatic complex, target organ involved, pathological changes taken place and the resistance of the patient. He ended with the concluding remarks that Potency has, is and will always remain a debatable topic in Homoeopathic seminars.
In the session on Gastroenterology Prof Rakesh Tandon from AIIMS New Delhi deliberated with the help of slides different investigatory procedures adopted for diagnosing GIT disorders. He stressed the value of endoscopic procedures recently introduced which give not only definite, diagnosis, but at times used for therapeutic purposes also. For eg. sclerosing with Oesophageal varices, excising polyps etc. He said with the help of Endosonography we can not only see the area of pathology directly but also take sonographs from very close distance. Dr Praful Vijayakar exhibited the embryological approach towards evolution of diseases and stressed the point that diseases evolves in a definite sequential manner as illustrated in the book of George Vithoulkas. Dr Girish Gupta showed his slides on Gall stone cases claimed to be managed by Calc carb, Lycopodium, Silicea and Natr-sulf.
On Geriatrics, Prof Nagarkar presented a lucid exposition on various problems of he aged. She and Dr Diwan Harishchand, stressed the point that out of the many, it is the socioeconomic enigma, that is the most important. He added, homes for the aged are not the solution ; instead the members of the family must be encouraged to support their old parents.
The next day began with a lively interaction on CPA under Dr V K Gupta. Drs Kasim, Parimal Banerjee, Rastogi and others participated. The overall consensus was that every Homoeopath must welcome it and should not worry as far as he remains true to his professional ethics and maintains detailed record of whatever he performs, because CPA punishes negligence on the part of the treating physician and not the failure of the system.
In the panel discussion on Immunisation, the members Dr Vijayakar, V K Gupta and Parimal Banerjee replied to queries raised by the participants. Infact it was unanimously agreed that until we have authentic statistical records conducted by recognised agencies,we should never guarantee prevention, of course constitutional treatment by itself prevent the individual from other minor assaults.
Thereafter, Dr Kasim Chimthanawala presented three interesting cases successfully managed by lesser known remedies viz of Ch Glomerulonephritis with severe Hypertension with Eels serum 30 and 200 on the trio of Albuminuria,Hypertension but No oedema; a case of Laryngeal Polyp suffering from hoarseness of voice better by smoking and associated with sore pain all over the body like Arnica with Manganum acet 200 and a case of Neurasthenia with Oxalic acid on the characteristic symptom of all complaints aggravates while thinking them. He impressed upon the fact that small remedies never cure the sickness, we may palliate certain distressing complaints with the help of these. Dr Kasim of New Delhi presented his works on Desmodium gangegticum in Cervical Spondylosis and Spondyloarthrosis.
On Glandular Disorders, Brig Dr J K Bansal,Prof of Medicine and specialist in Thyroidology, AIIMS, gave a vivid illustration on Thyroid disorders. According to him they are easy to manage provided diagnosed early. He strongly advocated the use of Iodised salt in endemic areas. Chairman, Dr Kasim presented a well documented case of Hyperthyroidism successfully treated by Conium and Tuberculinum 1M.
In the open session, 2 sets of cases were presented by Dr Chimthanawala in order to bring to light certain practical lacunae which a Homoeopathic physician faces during the application of its doctrines; 5 cases of Leukemia, though responded very well to Merc 30, 200, Carbo animal 200, Baryta carb 200 and others but three succumbed due to diarrhoea (eliminations) which is believed to be the natures method of reducing miasmatic load. Another set of 3 cases (2 of Progressive Muscular Atrophy) and 1 of Leucoderma ) who surprisingly responded well to Phosphorus 200, 1M and 10M but landed in full fledged Pulmonary Tuberculosis. (One had it in his past and the other 2 had f/h/ of the disease) obeying Herings Laws of cure. Dr p Banerjee informed the house about his works on newer drugs viz Catharantus rosiasus and Vitex negundo. He claimed good cures in Falciparum malaria, Haemorrhages and others from these drugs.
All the speakers were honoured with momento as and the participants numbering about 250 or so with certificates.
Founder President Dr V P Gupta and his team of dedicated fellows worked hard to make the Kents Memorial lectures really memorable.
