For external ear inflammation, the remedies that have yielded good results are Belladonna 6, Rhus-tox 30 and if there is considerable swelling Apis 6.
For middle ear inflammation,, Capsicum 30 has cured cases where the outside looks fine with no swelling. Aconite works well particularly at the onset of pain and this may be followed by Merc-sol. Pulsatilla is the standard remedy for earache particularly for sensitive children who cry pitifully. I have cured many cases with Aconite and Pulsatilla alone. If there is chronic catarrh. Kali-mur 6 offers a cure. For curing chronic middle ear infection, it will be necessary to use Tuberculinum 1M or Syphilinum 1M as a constitutional back-up.
For earache due to eustachian tube blocks, the following have been found useful and may be given four times a day-Iodum6 if there is constricted feeling in the throat, feeling generally hot. If there is running nose, coughing up of mucus Kali-mur 6. If there is catarrh and swollen adenoids, Merc-dulcis 6 and if symptoms of sinusitis exist, Silica 30 will do the job.
A CASE OF CHRONIC OTORRHOEA:
A 12 year old boy had chronic discharge of pus from the right ear with a foul odour. Sulphur-iod seemed to help initially and the discharge dried but soon the left ear was involved. A peculiarity was that the feet were cold and this symptom remained as far as the knees. A reference to Allens Handbook mentions-Frequent micturition with tearing in bed till midnight and purulent discharge smelling like putrid meat-a characteristic symptom of Thuja. Thuja 30 was given once a day for three days and it cured the patient permanently.
