Few Symptoms Of Convulsions or Epilepsy.

Hereunder are given symptoms of Convulsions/ Epilepsy compiled from the "Encyclopedia of Pure Homoeopathic Materia Medica" by Allen, "Drug Pictures" by M L Tyler and few from "Guiding Symptoms of Our Materia Medica" by C Hering. (NJH Vol IV No.6, Nov-Dec 1995). It follows on the same lines as done for Hair and Nails issue.

CONVULSIONS:

Convulsions preceded by trembling; the patient grimaces; bites tongue, foams at mouth - Absinthium.
Loss of memory after the epileptic attack, ie no recollection of the event (Post-ictal Amnesia) - Absinthium.

Clarke had greatly relieved epilepsy where aura was waving sensation in the brain - Cimicifuga.

Convulsions: falls down frothing at mouth after alternation of palpitation of heart and congestion of the head - Glonoine.

Convulsions during coitus - Bufo-rana.

Convulsions: in which aura begins in sexual organs or at solar plexus. Symptoms are preceded by incoherent talk, vexation and followed by profound sleep - Bufo.

Guernsey says, "Think of Cicuta-virosa" for convulsions which are excessively violent - whether epileptic, cataleptic, clonic or tonic; eclampsia. Convulsions with loss of consciousness, frightful distortions of the limbs and whole body.

Spasms extend from centre to periphery, from above downwards Cicuta-virosa (opposite of Cuprum where convulsions spread from extremities to centre).

Pre-eminently a convulsive medicine - Cuprum.

Convulsions where a limb will first flex and then extend. In a child you will see the leg suddenly shoot out with great violence and then up against the abdomen again with great violence then again shoot out. It is hard to find another remedy which has that - Cuprum (Tabacum).

Convulsions: the eye balls turn convulsively upwards, so that only the whites were visible - Cina.

Convulsions: first of facial muscles, then of the whole body - Dulcamara.

Convulsions: The right arm could not be extended. The left could not be flexed; both feet were drawn upward. The soles formed a half circle and the toes were spasmodically drawn inward - Colchicum.

Violent convulsions - A kind of epileptic attack; he entered the room with a cheerful countenance and sat down. Suddenly he felt intoxicated; whereupon he became still and looked for a long time at one spot, with a fixed stare, not answering questions, then he fell unconscious, bent himself together with unintelligent cries of Oh! ou!, au!, brr! etc and passed urine involuntarily. The limb as well as the whole body spasmodically convulsed, the hands convulsively clenched together with paroxysmal choking in the throat; half open mouth as if he would vomit; with foaming at the mouth, in the form of bubbles; hands cold, face covered with cold sweat and spasmodically distorted; eyes glassy and protruding; then he sat up and still did not answer questions, but clenched his teeth and stared at those who spoke. He did not allow the bystanders to touch him, pushed them away and wrestled with them, the face expressed violent rage. At last he groaned and moaned, until after a quarter of an hour, he gradually recovered and came to senses, there was subsequent aversion to all nourishment, even to that which was most agreeable - Cocculus

Convulsions, limbs and body stiff, jaws clenched - Cuprum-acetate.

Horrible convulsions, accompanied with extreme coldness- Helleborus-niger

Spasm commencing in the toes, followed by distortion of eyes and general spasm, distortion of limbs and frightful distortion of face, etc - Hydrocyanic-acidum

Convulsions - the spasms flex the limbs and bent body in tossed upwards - Hyoscyamus

She is rigid all over, as in tetanus - Hyoscyamus

Most violent convulsions, whole body perfectly stiff-tonic spasm and at the same time jerking, eyes glaring and still, jaws set, hands clenched, breathing, struggling, choking - Juniperus-verg.

Convulsions, staring eyes, closed jaws, frothing at mouth, followed by death - Laurocerasus

Convulsive contractions of all the muscles of the body - Lilium-tig.

Spasmodic motions of the muscles of the face, arms and legs, constant cramps in all the extremities - Merc-cor

Convulsive motions - Morphinum

Most violent convulsions in women and hypochondriacal men - Moschus

Convulsive attacks last from one to two minutes in which all the muscles become extremely rigid; jaws tightly closed; patient very restless with short cries - Nux-vomica

He fell back, foaming at the mouth and black in the face - Oenanthe.

Terrible convulsions followed by tetanic rigidity, coma and death - Oenanthe

Insensible and in strong convulsions; convulsions followed each other in quick succession with comatose intervals - Opium

Convulsive trembling of the facial muscles, lips and tongue - Opium

Convulsions with screaming, bending the head backward, at times ophisthotonos - Opium

The fits were almost continuous - Opium

While hard at work, and apparently in the best of health, he suddenly fell back unconscious, no spasms, foaming at the mouth etc - Plumbum

Violent involuntary movements of the muscles becoming convulsions - Plumbum

Loss of all senses with constantly recurring most violent general convulsions - Plumbum

Convulsions, preceding which the patient cried out, turned very pale, then became very much flushed, immediately following which, the body was seized with violent clonic spasms lasting an hour and followed by great perspiration, the attack was associated with involuntary discharge of urine - Plumbum

Drinking seems to hasten the return of paroxysms; hence though very thirsty, he dared not drink often - Plumbum

Most violent convulsions, with loss of consciousness, head hot, face flushed, purplish - Santoninum

Frightful convulsive movements and spasms - Secale-cor

The spasms are especially brought on by emotional excitement, followed by exhaustion, weakness and sopor - Secale-cor

Convulsions and spasms: they stretched their hands during the spasms as if they would grasp something carrying their hands to their mouths chewing and swallowing etc - Solanum-nigrum

Convulsions - jerk like starting - Stramonium. Frightful convulsions at the sight of a lighted candle or of water - Stramonium

Shocks, stitches, and convulsive attacks in the paralyzed part, recurring at regular intervals; always ending with sticky perspiration - Strychninum

Convulsions recur on slightest touch - Strychninum

Convulsions, the head firmly drawn back with rigidity of muscles of the posterior part of the neck - Tabacum

Violent involuntary contractions of all the muscles with appearance of frightful pain; constantly placed his hand upon the abdomen and tore at the penis forcibly - Tabacum

Convulsions caused by pressure on the spine, paralysis, retention of urine and feces - Tarentula-hisp

Catalepsy; he laid for about two hours rigid and stiff without consciousness or motion; followed by jerking back and forth - Thuja

Violent convulsions and nervous sequelae - Camphora

Convulsions; speechless but perfectly conscious of all that was going on around him - Camphora

Puerperal convulsions, cerebral congestion, hot, dry, skin, thirst restlessness and fear of death - Aconitum-nap

Convulsions; eyes open staring, fixed pupils or with agitation of arms - Amygdala-amara

Convulsions occurring immediately after delivery - Amyl-nit

Sudden convulsions followed by general fever (Meningitis infantum) - Apis-mel

By a very heavy meal, epileptiform convulsions are brought on - Argentum-nit

Convulsions preceded by great restlessness - Argentum-nit

Convulsions with opisthotonous; foam at mouth - Arsenicum-alb

Grinding of teeth, froth at mouth, thumbs drawn into fists eyes half open drawn upward - Artemisia-vulg

Spasms lasting ten minutes or longer ending in perfect relaxation resembling paralysis, followed by a sound sleep of half an hour or more - Artemisia-vulg

Remaining in same position, she stares straight before her with fixed eyes (Catalepsy) Artemisia-vulg

EPILEPSY:

Silicea is a great remedy for epilepsy.
Epileptic fit with - before attacks ears feel numbed - Also, worse from onions, which provoke an attack next morning. Drops in sleep - Thuja

Epileptiform spasm seems to be reflex from worms - Indigo

Epilepsy caused by fright or exciting mental emotions.

Repeated, frequent attack followed by profound sleep - Artemisia-Vulg

Epilepsy - spasm particularly which begins in fingers and toes then spread all over the body - Cuprum

Frightful epilepsy - Cicuta-virosa

Epileptiform convulsions; he trembled, staggered and fell down unconscious without crying. Epileptiform attacks with frothing at the mouth - Cuprum

Epileptic attack with screams and froth at mouth; he beat and about in unconsciousness with his arms and legs; then lay motionless as if dead; then began to make foolish sounds - Lycopodium

Epileptic attack after midnight; it came on like a mouse moving up and down the left side, Then the sensation disappeared, the arms jerked, the head and mouth were drawn back and forth, so that he bit his tongue, then he became quite stiff and snored - Nitricum-acidum

Epileptic attack, with violent delirium - Opium

His face turns death by pale; and with or without cry he is seized with an epileptic fit which lasted for ten minutes. The clonic convulsions were of so violent a nature, existing in the diaphragm and muscles of the larynx as well, that for a moment death from asphyxia seemed inevitable - Plumbum

One sided epileptiform spasms with convulsive twitching of the face followed by a transient general epileptic attack with strider and complete loss of consciousness - Plumbum

Epileptic convulsions; the muscular contraction began in the abdomen and extended upwards to the throat; the jaws were so violently brought into contact that a tooth was dislodged; the eyes rolled upwards and lastly the muscles of the limbs were affected. For an hour after the convulsions the patient lay perfectly motionless and then became very restless and talked incoherently. In about nine or ten hours he had a second convulsion and after nearly an equal interval a third and again fourth. Each fit lasted for one minute; they were all preceded by vomiting a dark colored matter and followed by symptoms similar to those, which succeeded the first fit - Plumbum

Epileptiform spasms - Secale-cor

Epileptiform spasms, occurring at intervals of about a month, during which the patient lost her memory, became foolish and spoke with difficulty - Secale-cor

Epileptic attack, at night about the time of new moon; the body was at first stretched out, then tossed about without cries and without biting the tongue - Silicea

Epilepsy - frequent attacks repeatedly, convulsions and violet colour of face, frothing from the mouth etc - Absinth

Periodic convulsions with uterine diseases - Cimicifuga.

Epileptic spasms with clenched thumbs, red face, eyes turned downwards, pupils fixed, dilated; foam at mouth, jaws locked, small hard and quick pulse - Aethusa-cyn

Epilepsy after fright - Agaricus-musc

Froth at mouth, face bluish and puffed - Agaricus-musc

Succession of fits, linking together by intervening unconsciousness, fits recurring with increasing frequently, till at last, no sooner is one fit ended or before it has finished another begins - Amyl-nit

Epilepsy from fright, during menstruation, at night, pupils always dilated for a day or two before - Argentum-nit

Epileptic convulsions preceded by a sensation of warm air streaming up spine into head, vertigo. Loss of consciousness and falling down - Arsenic-alb

Piercing shriek, turns eyes, with violent clonic spasms of all limbs - Artemisia-vulg.

Very much vexed, irritable, depressed during day before and attack at night - Artemisia-vulg

Insensible after fit - Artemisia-vulg

Epileptic spasms of children - Artemisia-vulg

Epileptic spasms after cooling off while over heated - Artemisia-vulg

Epilepsy from a blow on head commencing three years after - Artemisia-vulg

Epilepsy caused by worms - Asafoetida

Paroxysm easily excited by any emotion especially by contradiction - Asterias-rubens

The paroxysm occurs at commencement of last meal of day - Asterias-rubens

Sudden falling; livid face, convulsive motion of jaws, froth at mouth, convulsive shocks in limbs, loss of consciousness- Asterias-rubens

After attack great debility with sense of distress in epigastrium - Asterias-rubens

Almost continuous epileptic convulsions during pregnancy, with severe cutting or drawing pains in left ovary, extorting cries, caused to bend to that side, until a day or two before labor - Atropinum-sulph

NB: There may be many more such symptoms. So far the above symptoms pertaining to Convulsions/ Epilepsy have been compiled/ collected. More can be added as the study of Materia Medica will proceed. The compiler has treated a number of cases of Epilepsy, so far.
