Impotence and Homoeotherapeutics
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1996 Jul / Aug Vol V No 4.

Cases.
` Ust / Plat / Nux-v.

To love and be loved is a natural phenomenon. When this love is translated into one persons attraction towards the opposite sex, the emotional aspect consummates into sexual desire which culminates in sexual union. But when one partner lacks the drive and energy for sexual intercourse, we called that as impotency (in men) or frigidity (in women).

"Decreased sexual satisfaction may be relative or absolute. Frigidity in women is often due to inculcated attitudes or fears or due to defective personal relationship. Impotence may be psychological, as in anxiety or depression, or secondary to medical problems such as the pharmacologic effects of alcohol or sedatives, diabetes mellitus, physical debility and neurologic disease.".

"Medical Evaluation must be meticulous". The basic difficulty is often a function of problems of daily living and may not necessarily be due to physical or emotional disorders. The anxiety generated often exacerbates the condition and the physicians understanding attitude will go a long way in solving the problem.".

So far as psychological intervention is concerned (besides proper counselling) we have in our therapeutics, many remedies, meticulous use of which would bring back normalcy within a short period.

Psychological intervention is indicated when the problem is rooted in intra psychic conflicts. Individual therapy can help restore the conflicts that revolve around inhibitions developed during childhood or adolescence.

Treatment of both the partners should be the measure of choice when the sexual problem is secondary to major adjustment problems within the marriage."

CASES:

While taking up cases of impotency for treatment we have to give maximum importance to mentals which give the clue to the indicated remedy.

"Probing the Mind" of the patient is a difficult task and methods of approach to this problem are exhaustively enunciated by Dr S M Gunavante in his book.

The difficulty arises as the patients very often do not disclose their deep dark secrets, which are valuable for chalking out the line of treatment. In such cases, we have to go behind their personality and make certain hypothesis and decide the rubrics for arriving at the simillimum.

CASE 1:

In this connection, I would like to narrate the case of an Engineering student (reported in NJH issue of Jan - Feb 1994, Page 38 under the caption "The Resurrection") who, due to some mental aberration ran away from his house and was absconding for more than 2 months. Finally, when located and brought home, the treatment under a Psychiatrist did not help him to come out of the gloom and despondency.

Subsequently, when placed under Homoeopathic treatment with great difficulty the patient was persuaded to disclose "That his mind was totally pre-occupied on thoughts of sex with an irresistible desire for masturbation. The mere sight of ladies brought lascivious thoughts and the mental conflict forced him to run away from home.".

Under Ustilago 6 twice a day for a fortnight, the students behaviour changed dramatically and brought him to normalcy.

CASE 2:

A lady was being treated by me for her serious menstrual problems for months and I failed miserably. Finally, with a view to reviewing the case, I gave her a questionnaire which she was asked to answer most frankly, giving her the assurance that her replies would be kept in strict confidence.

She returned the format duly answered. To one query--"Does your mind dwell on sexual thoughts" she boldly replied "Yes, always". This was the missing link--the cause of my failure.

Few doses of Platina 1000 solved all her problems of irregular, protracted and too frequent, copious menses and leucorrhoea.

She was also blessed with a child thereafter.

Earlier, during Case-Taking it proved very difficult to elicit the Platina mind and the abnormal sexual appetite.

Rubrics:

KR 716--Sexual desire increased--PLAT
KR 724--Masturbation disposition--Plat
KR 726--Menses frequent, too early, too soon--PLAT
KR 725--Menses with large clots--PLAT
KR 728--Menses protracted--PLAT
KR 721--Leucorrhoea--PLAT

CASE 3:

A 40 year old man with a 4 year old son was employed in Muscat. During June 95 he was sacked from service due to indifferent behavioural pattern and depression and sent back to India. He could not take his family to Muscat, while in service. Since coming to Bombay, he was taking treatment from Psychiatrists without any benefit.

He came in for Homoeopathic treatment 10/7/95. He was taking Tab Libotryp DS daily as per Psychiatrist advice. When he called in for homoeopathic treatment his relations reported there was no benefit from the said treatment; he was reported to be sleeping in all the time under the influence of drugs. His wife reported that he had no desire for anything and was sleeping throughout day and night.

At Muscat while in employment, he was reported to be a chain-smoker and an alcoholic.

Treatment:

10/7/95: Nux-vomica 10M, 1 dose daily for 3 days.
25/7/95: Patient appeared bright, no mental depression, behaving normally towards everybody, but reported "Family Life" not that happy. He was given Conium 1000-1 dose daily for 3 days and asked to report after 2 weeks.
16/8/95: Both husband and wife came in, quite happy and cheerful in every respect. Later he could also get employment in Muscat. While leaving he was given Conium 1000. 4 doses with instructions to take 1 dose every month to complete the treatment.

RUBRICS:

KR 1407--Aggr, Tobacco--NUX-V, con
KR 1344--Aggr, Alcohol--NUX-V, Con
KR 711--Complaints from suppression of sexual passion--CON
KR 696--Erection wanting--NUX-V, CON.
