CASES MATERIA MEDICA GENERAL ARTICLES ABSTRACT MISCELLANEOUS Q & A

March Best of Calcutta Seminar
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1996 Jan / Feb Vol V No 1.
Chanda Shah & Varsha Trivedi.

Seminar Reports.

On the 16th and 17th March 96, we in Bombay, had a unique opportunity of learning the Calcutta method of Homoeopathy from the dynamic trio of Dr Dubey, Dr Mahendra Singh and Dr L M KhaN.

Right from the start they stressed the need for keen observation in addition to history taking eg a Maharani insisting on placing a flower vase at a particular place, was given Ars-alb with good result. Another case of a young boy with her fever and jaundice of 3 weeks duration was given Arnica when he said nothing was wrong with him. Similarity a case of a lady with 3 weeks fever, was given Ignatia as she was sighing a lot. A comatose patient (CT Scan showed hydatid cyst) was revived completely with Dulcamara when it was observed that twitching and jerking was more marked around the face.

Dr Dubey said one must know the sphere of action, depth and pace of action of medicine. He talked about the Acid group of medicines and gave us tips like Tuberculinum shivering when beginning to sleep, strong desire to sit down: (Sulphur)- headache after shampooing (not Rhus-tox); bad effects of hair dyes (Sulphur); significant growth of hair between scapulae etc. Dr Dubey also spoke of a case of corneal erosion which was cured with Coccus-cacti, based on symptom of "persistent sensation of particles of sand inside eye". Dr Khan also pointed out the importance of talking intrauterine history. He proved his point by citing a case of a 8 years old boy,who was cured of his susceptibility to cold by Plumbum, based on H/O premature delivery owing to small size of uterus.

Time and again Dr Singh emphasized a thorough study of Organon along with Materia Medica.

All in all we learnt of the time tested Calcutta method of Homoeopathy in contrast to out Bombay method where over-emphasis is given to mental symptoms and repertorisation. However it would have been more interesting if the speakers had stuck to their topics.
