Seminar Reports.
An Exciting Fare.
It was a lovely Christmas present attending Dr Jeremy Sherrs three day seminar held at Bombay between 23rd and 25th December 1995. I must say that it was easily the most satisfying seminar I have attended in a long time. It was an unbeatable mixture of a good speaker with his hand constantly on the pulse of the audience; an in depth knowledge and clarity about his area; and a natural and easy presentation with none of the pomposity often exhibited by Homoeopaths. He had a down-to-earth approach to cases, selecting rubrics, mainly physicals given 100 percent in patients own words with no theorizing, no hypothesizing or even interpreting.
With an easy presence and discussion he not only captivated his audience but clarified for me many philosophical issues: eg who with inferior knowledge some are more successful in practice than many others more knowledgeable. what is needed is a combination of warmth, good presence and easy rapport-a sure fire combination which contributes 50 percent to the patients recovery.
Jeremys commitment to Homoeopathy and to Indian colleagues was also apparent. He brought to India as many copies of his four books as he could and gave them away at the ridiculously low price of Rs 100/-per copy. The NJH is personally going to help him in his endeavor by bringing those books from London when ever feasible, so that fellow Homoeopaths can get these books from NJH office without addition of freight charges to the printed price.
- The only points to detract from an otherwise good seminar were non-adherence to time which made us lose two precious hours each day, more by way of material relating to both cases and Materia Medica to illustrate and substantiate his ideas.
- Applications:Normally, from any good seminar I am able to apply some part immediately in my practice. In this case, in the first day of my practice after the seminar, I could not apply his approach in any case nor make a signature in the two remedies which came up in my two new cases.
His presentation was at three levels covering the Philosophy, Cases and Materia Medica,. Reporting of cases may be carried on in the next issue as one issue will make it unprintably long.
FIRST PHILOSOPHY:.
CRUX OF HOMOEOPATHY IS DYNAMISM.
CRUX OF LIFE IS ALSO DYNAMISM the Following are also Dynamic:.
Vital Force Symptoms
Vital Force Medicines
Remedies Medicines
Diseases Prognosis
Homoeopathy=DYNAMISM subscribes to this maximally. Its basic principal is individualization, which means awareness of change from patient to patient his emotion and well being. (Strangely even the word Emotion=E-motion!).
- All disease are dynamic and therefore Homoeopathy, which is also dynamic, is the right medicine to cure the sick. The only diseases which are static are moles, broken bones, etc. These require static medicines ie fixed specific medicines-no modalities need to be inquired upon.
- When translated to Jeremys grammatical language-.Therefore, the Verb is necessary for the Homoeopath. For prescribing, we require verb, adverb and adjectives, Jeremy said we have to try to find out the very in every remedy and every case. To understand what he means by very we have to take help of remedies. For example-Aurum-mets verb is "Must go down"-whether to surrender, jump or dream of falling.
AURUM:The signature (ie the verb) is he must go up, to come down. So he climbs tot he top of a building to jump down and finally never succeeded in jumping.
Adverb=Big bang Noun=Hopeless.
SEPIA:Sits cross legs or else everything will fall. So the crux of Sepia is-"must
holds on".
Sensation=Empty.
Function=Hold on Must=Verb;
So here the sensation and function must balance out.
CASE 1: It was a live case taken by Dr Jeremy Sherr. This patient was being treated by Dr Jeremy Sankaran. A woman, 55 years old, complained of torticollis and consulted dr Rajan Sankaran in 1992. Both husband and wife were patients but the husband dropped out and later he died in 1995. Though Rajan Sankaran gave Rhus-tox in different potencies till 10M there was no relief.
The woman was docile and submissive and submissive. As a child she was with her grandparents while her parents were at Bombay; for financial reasons they could not keep her with them. At 18 she came over to Bombay. The father was domineering while the mother wanted to please (3).
The patient got married late at the age of 29 and it was an arranged marriage but it was a wrong match as her husband was even more dominating than her father. He was an alcoholic, eccentric and a failure in life; he took out all his frustrations on her and was very abusive. Her life was therefore very unhappy.
She worked as a steno to the president of a company, who was a slave driver as he was hard working and meticulous. As a result she developed spondylitis and pain in her left arm. Later it extended to her back and right hip to right leg. the pain was worse on lying down and better by working.
Finally she developed Torticollis and her head was tilted to the left side and after trying allopathy she decided to try Homoeopathic treatment.
Her symptoms were:
- Hand shakes worse looking down. The whole head aches. She could not turn her head nor
straighten it. When she was asked what things were bothering her, she said many things as
under.
Husband became a total alcoholic. She separated the son from the father and moved him to Nallasopara. She divided her time between them. Once when she was in Nallasopara her husband died. She felt guilty that she was not there to give him a decent burial. She felt as if all other family members were accusing her of having deserted her husband at the critical time. Now regrets, if only he had not been an alcoholic then they would have been happy. She feels depressed.
- Her son is not doing well and has no good job. Though she is emotionally close to her
son there is a communication gap. He gets sulky, talks less and is very sensitive. When
angry wants to beat her out controls it.
- Very rigid, upright, tense and cant let go. Cant bear music
- Moody if upset; avoids people and wants to be left alone.
- does not want to think about the past and has pushed all unpleasant things into her
subconscious mind. If anything stirs up her past memories she cries softly but not
violently which would relieve her.
- Pain worse lying down to sleep, better by walking and moving.
- Thirstless, appetite good,caves sweets (3), spices (3) and salt (2).
- Menses, scanty and irregular; menopausal since 1992. Gets hot flushes.
- Chilly but throws off cover after 10 minutes.
- Sleep uncomfortable. No dreams.
- Hot, worse winter very cold.
- Scared to be along. Very uneasy in house.
DISCUSSION:.
Good vitality as evidenced by willingness to work hard. No lack of energy. Hence good prognosis.
Problem areas:.
- Not smooth life=lumpy cough.
- She was dominated
- the patient is timid.
VERB-PUSHED DOWN (she was good at being pushed down).
Worse lying down (everyone is standing on top of me feeling).
Better by standing (for myself).
2nd Rubric: Emotional or Del wrong she has done. Head worse lying down, better standing,
better motion. Menses scanty (because sex genitals suppressed). Easily offended.
The remedy should be from vegetable kingdom as it is crushed easily and is sensitive. There are two remedies with strychnine which are appropriate (Nux-v and Ignatia). Ignatia had emotional upsets or grief.
Prescription suggested-Ignatia 1 2, 3 doses.
Must improve in 2 months. Then interpose an antipsoric remedy to complete the cure based
on fresh on fresh case taking. Likely remedies are Lachesis, Nux-vom or Naja to be decided
based an emerging symptoms.
NOTE:The follow-up of this case is awaited. The NJH office had telephoned Dr Rajan Sankaran and he has promised to get back to the NJH with the follow-up.
CASE 2:VIDEO CASE
This is a video case which was discussed at the seminar. An aged woman was anxious, nervous and had tachycardia. She had undergone. Had hysterectomy. She was looking worn out, sad and was constantly moving her left hand up and down.
She had children aged 17,15, and 10 years and had resumed working. She could never relax, would like to drive till dropped dead. She felt that she was at the cross roads of her life now, and did not know where to go or which direction to take. She found herself long and bored though doing many things. She said so with an embarrassing laugh. She however liked people and company.
Her parent were divorced very early in her life; her husband was always out of town; would come home for one week and would be out for another week but she never knew when.
She rolls in her bed and occasionally falls off her bed from one side or the other. Her complaints were aggravated by every change of weather. Has fear of aggravated by every change of weather. Has fear of death and angry over her circumstances and finds it very difficult to manage when her husband is not there. She has to hold her family together and as a child she wanted to keep her parents together. The involuntary movement of her hands symbolises her attempt and her intentions as if trying to hold the family together.
ANALYSIS OF THE CASE.
The important key words are must need have to=model verb.To move is freedom but being stuck at a motion is loss of freedom The patient does not know where she is as if in a boat in midstream.
Symptoms relevant for remedy selection.
- Head shaking several times.
- Vertigo < turning head.
- Hot-cold.
- Fear of death.
- Must keep moving(desire to drive till drop dead).
Prescription.
Cocculus 200-3 doses were prescribed.
Follow-up.
After 1 month amelioration in all her symptoms.
After 2 1/2 months she felt much better; ringing in her ears >;sleep better, more calm
and relaxed; tension less. Her problem with her husband was also much better and they
could spend more time together.
