Dr. J.T. Kent in "Lesser writings" says "What is more inhuman than to leave the suffering patient in his last moments to writhe in agonies of dissolution, surrounded by weeping friends? A true physician would rather try to exercise his skill at these moments". In my own little way I have tackled some serious cases where homoeopathy lessened their sufferings and gave a peaceful death and earned the gratitude of the patients family members. One such case:-

CASE : Obstructive Jaundice

A 68 years old patient, severely ill. The diagnosis was surgical obstructive jaundice; resulting from Cancer of Gall Bladder with secondaries in the liver (Annexures I and II)

Serum Bilirubin on 12-1-90 was 15.8 mg-dl and on 2-2-90 19.5 mg-dl.

He was discharged as incurable with only three weeks to die. The pain and suffering was not relieved even by pain killers.

I was consulted on 15-2-90; the patient was in great distress and the presenting symptoms were as follows:-

  1. Severe jaundice - skin all over the body and eyes were deep yellow.
  2. General anasarca (++)
  3. Tongue swollen, cracked.
  4. Abdomen much distended - Ascites
  5. Stool hard white colour.
  6. Urine deep yellow and scanty.
  7. Frequents bouts of coughing
  8. Expectoration - difficult, ropy, mucus.
  9. Retching and vomiting with cough - vomitus sour.
  10. Sensation in throat as if something sticking there.
  11. Much restlessness, worse at night.

TREATMENT:

Hydrastis-can 200, 8 hourly, three doses.

There was 10 percent relief. Hydrastis-can 200 was continued 12 hourly resulted in relief of most symptoms.

23-2-90 - He passed a large watery stool, very foul smelling, followed by fainting and loss of voice due to excessive weakness, China 30, 4 doses given.
5-2-90 - Rumbling in the stomach, occasional vomiting of a very foul watery matter. Sensation as if something sticking in the throat? (due to strain of vomiting). Hydrastis can 200 one dose followed by placebos 4 hourly on 3-3-90. Gradually yellow colour of jaundice improved; dropsy and anasarca also reduced. Placebo only 4 hourly.
6-3-90 - Vomiting previous night. Urine scanty. No thirst, aversion to water, he drinks water and vomits. Hydrastis 200 one dose.
8-3-90 - Foul smelling vomiting for two nights. Serum bilirubin 6.7 mg-dl (Annex III).

Due to repeated vomiting the patient had become very weak and supportive help of transfusion of glucose and blood became imperative. So, I talked to a friend who was a medical officer in a hospital. He agreed to help. Yet, strangely the patients wife did not follow it up, till 22-3-90. By this time the icterus, anasarca and dropsy had totally gone. The patient however was very weak. I called the medical officer on 22-3-90. After examining the patient he told it was too late and would do little good. Yet he was persuaded to try.

The patient was admitted to a hospital where IV fluids and blood transfusion were given, but the patient passed away on 23-3-90 as predicted by the doctors at AIIMS but without suffering and pain during the period from 15-2-90 to 23-3-90. The family was grateful as he did not need any pain killers.

But a permanent question remained in my mind. Had the patient been given supportive help earlier would he have survived for a longer period?

A DISCUSSION:

There are several medicines for jaundice. But in my experience and practice Hydrastis-canadensis has cured numerous cases of cancer of liver. Leading feature of this remedy is constipation, bronchial catarrh with the characteristic tenacious secretion. (A dictionary of Practical Materia Medica - Clarke page 920.)
