Seminar Reports.

A half day seminar on "Why computers are useful for efficient Homoeopathic Practice?" was organized by Dr. Jawahar Shah at Bhaidas Sabhagriha, Vileparle (W), Bombay on 26-2-95.

Dr. SPS Bakshi, President, Central Council of Homoeopathy, New Delhi, inaugurated the seminar. In his inaugural address, he drew attention to the growing popularity of Homoeopathy in India. There are now 125 Homoeopathic, colleges in India and merit students are now seeking admission. The real problem was that of experienced teachers in these colleges. He stated that he had been using computers for several years now and particularly the Hompath software developed by Dr. J. Shah. It has greatly helped him in finding the similimum. He has done considerable research in allergic cases and their Homoeopathic treatment. The skin repertory compiled by him would be given to Dr. Jawahar Shah for inclusion in his Hompath software.

He formally released the Windows version of HOMPATH. Later Mrs. Swati Bhave a paediatrician, gave a masterly presentation on use of computers in aiding the diagnosis of diseases and their treatment in allopathy. She presented a number of slides and indicated that her stint in Harvard Medical School had helped her immensely in the use of computers in her practice as in that school all possible medical problems and emergencies were simulated and a doctor thus trained is never at a loss to handle any type of cases in his later practice. The side effects of allopathic drugs have been computerized and because of this knowledge, in her practice she was regulating the dosage of allopathic drugs to minimize such side effects.

Then Dr. Jawahar Shah demonstrated on stage the various components of the HOMPATH software developed by him. It was particularly useful in repertorisation as it had 25 repertories including those of Dr. Kent and Boger Boenninghausen. He showed how quickly the cases could be repertorised and the same rubrics could be repertorised through different repertories to arrive at the similimum. The availability of materia medica section in the software will enable the doctor to decide on the similimum. The other components enable a doctor to record his cases and analyze them and maintain accounts etc.

Thereafter Dr. Farokh Master, Dr. Anil Bhatia, Dr. Vajifdar and Dr. Vishpala Parthasarathy gave cases where the use of computers and Hompath software helped them to prescribe both in acute and chronic cases. Dr. F.Master said that use of computers helped him a great deal in his writing of books. His latest book which is on drams was based on extensive use of computers. Dr. Vishpala on the contrary cautioned that there may be cases where the computers may not suggest the correct remedy and it is here that the doctors knowledge of materia medica and experience will guide. She cited one example in this regard. Simultaneously Dr. Shah (who had earlier recorded the symptoms in each case) demonstrated on the screen how repertorization was done using Hompath software. It was very fast. A more leisurely presentation of a case or two demonstrating the use of software at each symptom stage, would have helped the participants to appreciate its various facets, better.
