CASES MATERIA MEDICA GENERAL ARTICLES ABSTRACT MISCELLANEOUS Q & A

Nux Vomica and Sulphur
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1994 Nov / Dec Vol III No 6.
Hasmukh Patel.
Materia Medica.
` Nux-v / Sulph.

Nux-vomica and Sulphur are two medicines routinely used in my practice. The points for prescription are -

  1. In persons sensitive to betel nut Areca-catechu, (Supari in Hindi) or Pan masala (eg. Pan Parag) suffer from various ailments. For eg. - vertigo, fainting, choking and gurgling in the throat or epigastrium, flushes of heat, perspiration, weakness etc. The most frequent sensation is a feeling of lump.
These cases require Nux vomica. In most cases Nux-vomica followed by Sulphur gives good results. (100 cases).
  2. Pain in the calf muscles ameliorated by tight bandage or a thin rope. It is a frequent complaint in many patients. A reference to the modality - wrapping part ameliorates in Boger-Boenninghausens repertory (page 881) - Nux vomica alone.
Three other remedies Ignatia, Nitric-acand Spigelia are to be kept in mind while using this modality. Nitric-acid and Spigelia are better by steady constant pressure (but not hard) (Phatak Rep. p. 278). Steady pressure ameliorates - Ignatia.
  3. Dyspnoea or asthma ameliorated by rubbing the back (especially between the scapula) (4 cases). Nux vomica cures this case.
The same modality is also seen in Bismuth but it ameliorates the stomach symptoms and the anxiety.
  4. Swelling of veins especially at the middle of forehead. This is a very useful sign and can be relied upon when the indicated remedies do not act in acute or chronic diseases. The swelling of the vein appears during conversation with the patient, when he is laughing, weeping or stooping. It may be single, vertical, forked, branched or even in a bundle. Sulphur in such cases should be prescribed and the case cleared for the indicated remedy to be prescribed later. (90 cases).
Other drugs for the same condition are - Abrotanum, Caladium, Camphor, China, Cubeba and Pilo-carpin (Vithoulkas).
  5. Sensitive to unpleasant odors - Sulphur. (in 90 percent cases). Other drugs are - Acon, All-cepa, Palladium and Phos. (Kunzlis Repertory - 294).
A Sulphur patient when confronted with a bad odor (e.g. - offensive breath, flatus, etc.) will immediately cover his nose with a handkerchief annoyingly.
  6. When a case has good concomitants, modalities or causation consider Sulphur. This is because Sulphur patients are inquisitive. They know a lot about themselves and can talk endlessly about self.
  7. Sulphur patients feel sleepy or begin yawning when bored on when they lose interest in the surroundings or the subject during conversation.
  8. Both Nux-vomica and Sulphur patients are not prospective patients. They will not bring more patients to you as a Staph or a Phos. patient will. They may bring a few (one or two) patients in a controlled manner in the course of treatment so that the doctor will treat them better and expect concession in fees.
They may however bring their relative or friend whom they care for very much and want them to be benefited from treatment so as to oblige them. The rubric-Indifference to the welfare of others, fits this picture precisely.
  9. Persons sensitive to vegetable ghee (processed oils) require Sulphur. (8 cases).
  10. A Tip: After giving the similimum cure is certain, if patient gets one of the following -
    1. Dreams the whole night.
    2. Feels very heavy (whole body within a few minutes after taking the remedy).
    3. Feels very thirst and has to drink large amounts of water - he is proving the remedy.
