Prescribing Judiciously And Rationally?
The opening Aphorism of Organon of Medicine by Samuel Hahnemann is - "The physicians high and only mission is to restore the sick to health, to cure, as it is termed."
As a practitioner of Homoeopathy, I feel that, when I prescribe a medicine to some patient, actually I tamper with the life force of the patient; therefore I feel it necessary that at least, the patient should be harmed by the prescription. Because Cure can only take place when the Similimum is presented and identifying Similimum in each and every case, is not all that easy.
During treatment, a need may arise to change the prescription. As such, there are complementary remedies, remedies that follow well, remedies that alternate, And there are remedies which are inimical and remedies that do not follow well certain remedies. In Homoeopathy all these terms have specific meaning and specific condition - on the demand of the symptom totality only.
On the other hand there are remedies which are complementary in a certain sequence. For example, Calcarea-carb is complementary to and follows well after Sulphur but Sulphur does not follow well Calcarea-carb.
A few days ago I happened to see a prescription given for a patient suffering from renal troubles by a well qualified (DHMS) physician. The prescription was as follows -
- Calcarea-carb 1M
- Sulphur 1M
- Thuja M
All this is to be taken daily in drop doses in the given sequence.
All Masters, Hahnemann and afterwards who were keen observers and good analyzers observed:
- that generally Sulphur does not follow well Calcarea-carb (according to Hahnemann, Calcarea-carb is incompatible before Sulphur) and Thuja has antidotal action after Sulphur.
- That it has been observed that the duration of action of each of the above medicine is about 60 days. Which means that if the proper dose is administered and the action of it has started, it goes on, if not interfered for some time, which can only be determined by waiting and watching.
The purpose of putting this example before readers is -
- If such physicians have done research systematically, as the masters did, and have some ground to counter the observations of the great masters, they are invited to publish their observations for the benefit of the Homoeopathic fraternity.
- If they write prescriptions arbitrarily, they are advised to spare some time for the study of philosophy, Materia Medica and the Repertory and be careful in prescribing, lest some sensitive patient be harmed and thus Homoeopathy be disgraced.
- If the Homoeopathic physicians will continue such practice, will they brighten the future of Homoeopathy at a time when the general public has started getting attracted towards this science.
- If physicians are following the science in its real sense and treating the patients judiciously and rationally" are going to be true practitioners of the healing art?
Homoeopathy has immense capabilities to save mankind from the miseries of disease as well as of the over drugging, but only by proper application of the science.
