Homoeopathy in Emergencies
NATIONAL JOURNAL OF HOMOEOPATHY 1993 Sep / Oct Vol II NO 5.
Prabhakar Murthy.

Homoeopathy works in a miraculous manner provided the symptoms fit in perfectly. If used correctly and in time, one surely gets quick results. In a few minutes it relieves the trouble faced by the patient.

Emergencies can be classified into two -

  1. Acute disorders
  2. Acute exacerbations of chronic diseases.
Simple fevers, diarrhoeas, dysentery and injuries come in the first type while status asthmaticus, status epilepticus, comatose conditions and complications of tuberculosis or peptic ulcers, renal calculi, etc. fall in the second category.
I would like to illustrate the efficacy of homoeopathy with a few cases.

Case 1:
A 10 year old boy had severe diarrhoea since 4 days. When he came for homoeopathic treatment he was in a state of severe dehydration. The pulse was very feeble, body cold and small beads of perspiration on the forehead. Veratrum-alb 200 was given which stopped the diarrhoea in a few hours.

Case 2:
A Suprapubic cystostomy had been performed in the morning on a 25 years old male patient. However, even by late evening, the patient had not regained consciousness. Strontium-carb 1M was given on the indication of Shock from surgery. 10 minutes later the patient regained consciousness.
Extract: Kents Materia Medica; Hypericum which says - "Stront-carb is the Surgeons Carbo-veg".

Case 3:
A female patient, 50 years old, was admitted to a hospital with severe abdominal pain since 4 hours. The patient had not eaten anything since morning. She was in severe pain and was ameliorated by lying on the abdomen. Belladonna 200 one dose was given. Another dose was put in half glass of water to be given at 15 minutes interval after stirring it 20 - 25 times.

Meanwhile the husband told me that the patient was being treated for renal calculus by an urologist. Before the next dose the patient was fast asleep. So no more repetitions were required. Later Berberis-v 1M one dose was prescribed and after two days she painlessly passed a stone in her urine.

Case 4:
A patient was in coma afevere haematemesis at 1:30 A.M. In the hospital bed the patient fainted after severe vomiting of bright red blood. Since 2 hours the patient was unconscious, had a besotted appearance, feeble pulse, stertorous respiration and not responding to stimulus; pupils were pinpoint.
Opium 1M one dose given in water. The second dose given in water after 15 minutes. A few minutes later the patient woke up and inquired, for whom the doctor was called in, at night.

Case 5:
A male patient 35 years old, had fever with drowsiness, I went for a visit. He had a past history of severe headaches followed by fainting for which I had given him Natrum-mur. It did not give any relief. So I advised him to consult a neurophysician.

He was diagnosed as having a Astrocytoma in the lower grade midline posterior fossa. A midline suboccipital craniotomy and tumor decompression was done in NIMS, Hyderabad. Radio-therapy was also given. He was later prescribed CCNU (Lomustin) capsules.

A year later, the medicine was stopped for fear of doing more harm than good as it was chemotherapeutic drug. Since the patient was showing no signs of improvement, the doctors told them that there was not much he could do now and that the treatment would fail.

Later the patient had fever and drowsiness. So the relatives called me for homoeopathic treatment. Fever persisted since 3 days. Gelsemium 30 three doses were given. By next evening the patient had gone into coma and was not reacting to stimuli. The pupils were pin point. The prognosis was poor.

Opium 1M was put in water and to be taken in half hourly doses.
When I visited him after 2 days, I was amazed to see the patient alive and happily taking his meals. I was told that the patient had regained consciousness in 24 hours, could even sit and walk. The medicine was still continued.

I stopped Opium and gave him Kali-phos 6X one tablet three times daily. The patient was very well and till date does all routine household activities. I advised a repeat CT Scan to check the regression of the tumor, but since the patient could not afford it, it was not done.

I remember a Chinese proverb which says -
When I hear, I forget;
When I see, I remember and
When I do, I understand.

So it becomes the duty of doctors not just to know (hear) some tips from senior doctors, but to work hard themselves and apply what has been learned in day to day practice.
